I haven't knit with Classic Elite before; what do you all think about them?

Which Classic Elite yarn are you considering, and what do you wish to knit with it? That company has some really wonderful yarns. I'm guessing that for everyone who likes a yarn, someone else will NOT like it!

Good luck.

Nothing specific - I have a copy from the library of the Classic Elite Quick Knits book, and they have some very pretty patterns. [The one I like best is a baby blanket, which they knit in Posh, a mixture of cashmere and silk - right! Gorgeous, but I won't be burdening my dear niece with hand wash only baby blankets for her twins, even if I could afford it!]

Haven't seen it in LYS, and favorite online stores don't carry it either, so that made me a little nervous.

Classic Elite has always put out nice pattern books. Be sure to look around online for errata if you are making one of their patterns. They used to have an unfortunate tendency toward several errors (not uncommon for the big companies, either). They're a big company with a strong history and many yarns in the fold. I've enjoyed several of them over the years. My only "complaint" relates to a personal preference for hanks/skeins longer than 109 yards --- theirs tend to be around that neighborhood.

In addition to queries here, you might look up the yarns on Ravelry and then look at the projects tab for each - arrange them by "helpful notes" and you may get a sense of knitters' enjoyment/suitability for different projects. HTH.

Good suggestions. Thanks much! One question: where are these "helpful notes" of which you speak?
[Clearly not too fluent in Ravelry-speak!]

It is different depending on how you are searching. If you are searching by YARN, when you go to the projects page for the yarn, you can sort the projects using drop-down window at left by "most favorited," etc. In the windows, you will see little life preservers. Those tell you how many people found the posting "helpful."

BUT - if you are looking at a PATTERN and then all of the projects that have been made, you can choose "Helpful notes" in left drop-down and it will sort the projects by those with the most "life preservers." HTH!

geniaknitz, there's also a "yarn ideas" page, which I really like. There's a tab for it at the top of the main pattern page. That page sorts shows a breakdown of the yarns used for the project. Cascade used so many time, Berroco used so many times. And then you can click the "used x times"link on that page and go to a page that shows all the projects made with that yarn.

Oh, yes, of course ... Ravelry! Anytime I am considering a new yarn with which I am not familiar, I always look it up under a "yarn" search and read the comments for the yarn itself. When looking at the comments, I want the comments from knitters who have actually USED the yarn, not just those who are saying, "Oh, how pretty this looks."

THEN I go to the projects from that yarn and look up the type of project I want to make from it (blanket, sweater, whatever) and follow the suggestions from Robinsteph and Nutmeg Owl. If I don't like the comments and the "star" ratings, I'll look for other yarn suggestions for the pattern I want to knit.
