  Knitting Tips & Trade Secrets

If you've ever spent time at a yarn shop or reading online knitting email lists, you'll know that invaluable wisdom can be gained from fellow knitters. "Knitting Tips & Trade Secrets" is a collection of similar wisdom from the readers of Threads Magazine.

Tips from Threads

The book contains a collection of knitting tips from Threads' "Tips" column. You'll find all sorts of information, not only for hand-knitting but also machine-knitting and crochet.

Finding Your Way

Unless you plan to read the book from cover to cover, you'll want to make friends with the book's index. The table of contents gives only a general indication of the topic areas.

Inside, you'll find tips on how to soften an itchy sweater, achieve an even gauge when knitting colored patterns, untangle yarn bobbins, draw knitting-machine patterns on your computer... and that's just scratching the surface!

Where it Fits

This book isn't a how-to-knit guide, and it's not a pattern collection. It's more like my grandmother's well-worn cookbook, which contains hand-written notations spanning more than 30 years of experience.

The book is a fun read. It's also a great resource to consult when you're having problems that nobody else has been able to answer, or if you're embarking on a project involving techniques you've never tried before. Chances are you'll learn something new.

Previous Reader Comments

"This book is fantastic! Packed with useful information and helpful diagrams. And it's the perfect size to keep in my knitting bag!" Anne, 7/23/2001

"I think your review hit it on the head. I find this a fun book to browse through and gives me ideas for alternative methods for coping with knitting problems that come up from time to time, as well as ideas for trying new techniques. Since it is a small book it is easy to carry around for what I call 'waiting around' reading." pkegh, 7/20/2001

"I have the book Knitting Tips & Trade Secrets, it's a great read I have used it as you say 'the way you used grandma's cook book.' I have found in knitting as well as cooking some things never go out of style, just forgotten for a while. Than along comes a good book and reminds us that someone before us had that same problem and gives a helping hand. I also want to let you know how much I enjoy this Knitter's Review and I just love the polls. Thank you for taking the time to put this on line for all of us." Pat, 7/20/2001

"I have this book and it's really wonderful! Every time I pick it up I learn something new and interesting and I've been knitting for 30+ years." sab, 7/20/2001
