| Readers Recommend: The Knitting Workshop (formerly the Weaving Workshop) Chicago, Illinois by Erica Lee In the heart of Chicago's upscale Lincoln Park, near DePaul University, the Knitting Workshop is a yarn haven. I felt very welcome there on my first visit. It was exactly what I expected of a yarn store in the big city. The inviting interior has hardwood floors and yarn on every wall. On a typical weekend day, you'll find a group of knitters sitting at the table in the front of the store. Passers-by are always peering in to see what the knitters are doing. Getting There Knitting Workshop is on Lincoln Avenue, just south of Fullerton. The store is close to the Fullerton 'L' stop for both the red and brown lines. Parking is neighborhood parking, so you may or may not find a spot. By bus, it's two blocks from Clark and Webster stop or right across the street from the Lincoln and Webster stop. What You'll Find Owner Mary Wobbekind has an extensive variety of yarns of nearly every fiber you can imagine. She carries an extensive Anny Blatt collection, as well as yarns from Rowan, Mission Falls, Trendsetter, Classic Elite, Jaeger, Jo Sharp, Filatura di Crosa, and Colinette. There's also a good selection of baby yarns. If you're looking for great basic sweater yarn for your conservative father, you'll find it. If you want something elegant for yourself, you'll also find it. The staff is more than helpful in locating yarn and patterns or just giving you a little help on your project. If you can't find the yarn you want, Mary will order it. Prices range from affordable to expensive. Helpful Extras The shop has an ongoing schedule of classes from beginning knitting to fair-isle/intarsia and sock knitting. Every Thursday is knit night, which is open to anyone interested in socializing and knitting. There are also regulars at the shop who love talking and are always willing to give help and advice. |
