Poor ol' novelty yarn can't get a break these days. At TNNA, Cat Bordhi guided me toward a most intriguing ribbon yarn from Mountain Colors that was made from...drum roll please... WOOL. Well, it has 20% nylon to keep the whole thing from falling apart, but still. A wool ribbon yarn. What a nice concept!
Thus is the context for this week's review of Mountain Colors Merino Ribbon. It's not a new yarn, just a potentially overlooked one.

I've had the extreme good fortune to have toured Mountain Colors in the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana. We enjoyed a demonstration of their dyeing process of the legendary colorways. I didn't meet a colorway I found lacking in beauty.
They have boxes of samples at very reasonable prices and that allowed me to try all their yarns. They don't have anything that isn't wonderful, believe me, this ribbon yarn included. It is like no other ribbon yarn.
The Mountain Colors people are beyond nice and charming. I highly recommend visiting them if you have the chance.

I am not a fan of ribbon yarns, but Merino Ribbon was certainly an exception in my book. I echo what Jane said - it was a pleasure to knit with and it's lovely to wear. I got a nice-sized scarf out of a single skein and it's soft and cushy without any fuzz. And Mountain Colors is a wonderful dyer, too. Glad you discovered it, Clara!
ETA: Flicker pix of the scarf since this reminded me to dig it out. One sk = a 5.5" x 76" piece.

This is a wonderful yarn! I made a cardigan from it several years ago, and it looks great (given the knitter) and wears beautifully. I was afraid the yarn would snag, but that has not been the case:

This is the only ribbon yarn that I've ever been interested in using, both because of the fiber content and because of the beautiful colorways Mountain Colors produces. I wish more LYSs were carrying it, though. I love to pick my hand-painted yarns in person so I can get a truer sense of the colors and the length of pattern repeats.

I used this yarn in a shawl that was made out of various Mountain Color yarns and knit end to end.

The shawl turned out lovely--and very soft. However, I never wore it! Clara is right about the ribbon yarn--I do not recall having a problem knitting with it either and am glad she did a review on it--this inspires me to make something with it once more.

I made a Corrugator scarf with Merino Ribbon for the Red Scarf Project -- it was wonderful to work with, and the simple stitch combined with the yarn made for a great knitting experience.
I used US10 needles and loose tension, and it was finished in no time. It didn't curl or twist much at all, which surprised me. That scarf was bouncy and soft and perfect for wrapping up in! Thanks for reminding me of this yarn, Clara.

This one is not for me. I used Colinette Wigwam which is a flat cotton tape, another version of ribbon yarn. It's part of the AbFab Throw kit and I disliked knitting with it. It twisted and twirled and curled and whirled and OMG was so annoying.
In addition I don't care for nylon in any yarn other than sock yarn.
I like Merino, though.

I'm glad to see a review of Mountain Colors yarn. I absolutely love their colorways and Bearfoot is my favorite sock yarn. |
