Posted - 08/31/2010 : 5:39:14 PM I bought my first wheel today, and along with it came 2 lbs of carded fiber, turned out to be icelandic. My first attempt to spin with it was pretty bad. I know how wonderful the results CAN be, just not sure how to get there. I would really appreciate any advice, tips, or words of wisdom here.

Posted - 09/01/2010 : 3:50:07 PM thank you shelia, i am now spinning off the fold and i have much better control. Now i just have to get a feel for how much twist. I am getting a lot of areas where my yarn drifts apart, so I guess i need a bit more. practice, practice, practice
thank you again, jenny |

Posted - 09/01/2010 : 01:36:02 AM Spin it woolen style, and rather loosely. You can do this with modified long draw, long draw (both of these involve letting the twist into the fiber that you are drafting BACK from the orifice), or over the fold. If you spin with a short forward draft, or inchworm style, the fiber will most likely be to compacted and overtwisted, which will make your yarn hard an prickly.
Icelandic can make a nice single, because it takes so little twist to hold together. It is also a good 2 ply, again with a soft twist. Use your largest whorl (pulley) and a fair amount of brake tension to pull your drafted fiber onto the bobbin so that it doesn't get overtwisted.
2 pounds is a great amount of practise fiber - you'll have some nice yarn as you work through the first few ounces of practise time.
