Just returned from a trip to Norway. They are extremely happy with it and wow couldn't that $3 billion be spent better elsewhere. We have a family member with cancer. Just go to a cancer clinic and set there for an afternoon and see the despair over the disease and the medical costs that eat at people worse then the cancer. We have to start somewhere. |

Yes, Milinda, that's what I was referring to. It seems that so many decisions have been purely politically motivated recently, and after Citizens United I just lost all faith in the Supreme Court.

Back to the original post...it made me smile. The day it was posted was my "anniversary" at work. I took the job as a temporary position...30 years ago. Time sure flies, doesn't it? (I celebrated the anniversary by baking 5 dozen Kolaches and taking them to work. Even the dieters ate them!)

It was a good day! Ironically I work in healthcare and was chairing a meeting that primairly deals with healthcare cost. One of the attendees got the CNN notification that the individual mandate had been struck down. We were all so bummed, and then the correction came out and we were so happy.
the nice thing about the decision is that is was pretty apolitical, which helps to bring a degree of respect back to the court.

I almost melted with relief when I heard this verdict. It gives me hope. Didn't a major Republican vote in favor of it? I was so sure it was going to be a repeat of Citizens United. Corporations should have free speech. Bah!

I had no idea it was going to cost that much to repeal. These people really do want to cut off their noses to spite their faces.
It has been a long time since I was in school, but I took civics in high school. It was one of my favorite classes. I remember having a mock election campaign then. At the time Hubert Humphrey, Richard Nixon and George Wallace were running for president. The majority of the kids in the class were supporting George Wallace (I went to school in S.Carolina). I believe I was the only one in support of Nixon (what can I say? I was only in 8th grade at the time and didn't know any better.). I believe that was probably the only time I was in support of someone with an "R" next to their name.
I think nowadays a lot of the educational focus is on making sure they pass those tests (TAAS, TAKS, I'm not sure what it is called here in Texas). I think a lot of kids these days don't have any analytical skills. They just "learn" enough to pass the exit exam. So sad.

And one wonders do they no longer teach Civics in school? Congress approved it; POTUS signed it and the Supreme Court ruled. The process of check and balance was followed, so, therefore, it IS constitutional. And if some of us have to live with a corporation being a person and allowing for all these ridiculous amounts of money being spent on these campaigns, then some can live with this particular decision.

Rand Paul has been in a snit about the ruling. “Just because a couple people on the Supreme Court declare something to be ‘constitutional’ does not make it so,” Mr. Paul said in his written statement after the ruling. “The whole thing remains unconstitutional.” Uh, I hate to break it to you, Mr. Paul, but the Supreme Court's job is to rule on whether something is constitutional or not. I'm not a constitutional scholar (neither is he), but apparently he is unclear about the three branches of government. He also is calling for a revolt. Keep it classy, jerk-face!
