One of my friends is looking for a distaff for a presentation she's doing. An old one is preferred, but she'll take pretty much anything that does the job.

There's lots of different distaffs (does she want one that attaches to her wheel, or a free-standing one, or one for spindle spinning? For wool or for flax?), and many of them are quite easy to make (google should help). For a spindle demonstration I got a branch with lots of suitably arranged twigs off my plum tree, cut off the twigs at a suitable length, got rid of the bark (the rabbits helped), sanded the remaining wood and cut it off so I cut put it comfortably in my belt. And then I forgot to take it back home with me after the festival - grrr...
I got the idea from a similar device that came with my antique Swedish wheel. I always figure that making things myself will give authentic enough results (when I'm using traditional materials, that is) because that's what people of former times would have done.
