You should get to know John, a retired British schoolmaster who posts on the TKGA forum. He is a brilliant knitter and generous teacher who encourages others to become independent and design their own knitwear -- no "trust the pattern" with John! He has posted some pictures which make it clear that his wife is one of the best-dressed women in the county, at least in terms of sweaters and shawls.
"Where so many hours have been spent in convincing myself that I am right, is there not some reason to fear I may be wrong?"

We have three men in our local knitting group, and I have the pleasure of being married to one of them.
And all the women that were wise hearted did spin with their hands, and brought that which they had spun, both of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, and of fine linen. Exodus 35:25

Hi from an ex-Brit living in Australia (been here a long time) - Good on you - no reason at all for anyone to put anybody off being creative -there should be more men like you (I'm sure there ARE plenty - I once knew a University Science professor who used to crochet on the London Underground - He made things for his wife as well as himself - Keep up the good work - Happy Knitting - Lucylocket[meow]
