I've been experimenting with Pro chemical's one-shot dyes. Easy to use - yes, but I'm finding them somewhat unpredictable. I'm working with just the starter kit - a yellow, blue and red....and I'm wondering how to mute them a bit. I tried making a skein in a "melon" theme, with a muted red, green, orange and a bit of yellow for fun. But I got parrot instead of melon. Very bright pink and green. The yellow and orange aren't too bad.
Can you think of something I can over-dye with that might tone things down?
And while I'm at it - any tips are estimating the color before I apply it? I've tried applying to a paper towel, but that doesn't seem to be working very well. |

In general, to mute a color, you add a little bit of its complement. If you want to mute red, you add a bit of green, to mute yellow, you add a bit of violet, and so on.
