#65279;Can anyone please help me with the US crochet hook sizes? They seem to be inconsistent and I
have a very hard time to figure out what size of hook to buy to finish my project I started 8 yrs
ago in order to have a same gauge. The pattern calls for size # 9, but there is no such thing in
stores. I have a mess of hooks (Bates and Boye) like 00, B, 2.7mm, but none as 7, 8, 9, etc, and
they were all bought here in the U.S. Hook conversion chart did not help. Any help we be very
appreciated. |

working with thread, a #9 hook would be the steelite in 1.25mm (Bates) to 1.4mm (Boye)depending on which brand was used by the pattern writer. If it were I, I'd swatch with a steel 7 or anything smaller (8, 9, 10) I could lay hands on because even if I still had the same hook, my tension/gauge may have changed over the intervening years. steel hooks are currently on special at joann.com., don't know about their brick & mortar store prices since I don't have one within 100 miles of me.

First I want to thank to all that responded. I am making a bedspread, using Classic Crochet Thread # 10. When I had about 1/4 of the bedspread done, carpal tunnel forced me to put it away, some 8yrs ago. Recently I have decided to finish it up, but I cannot find my hook I originally used for the project. Now I have bought a whole mess of crochet hooks, but none seems to be the right one. |

I looked at my hooks and it seems pretty consistent letter i is US9

in order to help you, the first thing we need to know is whether you're working with thread or yarn because the hook sizing is completely different. Steel hooks (for thread) come in sizes 00 to about 14 with the larger numbers representing smaller hooks so, for example, a size 1 is larger than a size 6. The Boye brand of these hooks will usually only carry a number but the Susan Bates brand will have both the US size # and a mm size, such as 7 / 1.5mm. Aluminum hooks for yarn are the opposite and are usually marked with a size letter, a number, and a mm number, for example G6/4mm with the size A or B much smaller than a Size H or P. The aluminum hooks are more consistent in size from brand to brand than are the steel ones, but I believe only Susan Bates sells a US 7/4.5 mm.
A wide range of steel hook sizes is not usually found in the big box store since "no one does fine work anymore"; they often only carry 00 or 0, 1, and 7. You may need to shop online to find the sizes you need. I carry a full line of steel hooks from Sz 00 through 10 and will special order Sz 12 & 14 upon request but your profile doesn't indicate where you are located so I don't know if I can be of further assistance.

Thinking further,
You did not mention the type of yarn called for in your project,
and I made the assumption that you were using a "yarn" and not a "thread" - shame on me <G>
So "just" to add to the confusion, if this is a "thread" project,

You are quite correct, not only are there difference between manufacturers, but to some degree within a manufacturer depending on when the hook was manufactured.

If all else fails, since you mention this as an old "work in progress" it should be easy enough to check the gauge in the project and then make a small gauge swatch "in pattern" and then decide from that what hook will be needed.
