I am knitting the Broken Cable Pullover (Calvin Klein) from Vogue Easy Knits, but I am knitting it seamless. Because I am using Mirasol Tupa, 50-50 silk-merino, would adding phony side seams be a good idea? Or would the broken cables offer some stability to the garment. I'm expecting this will grow some due to the high silk content.

I would be afraid that this will shorten the seam too much. Having said that, try it, ripping out the seam after picking up 2 rungs each time will be no harder than starting the phony seam process in the first place. |

Thanks! Now another question:
I have noticed that, because there are no cables on the underarm areas, that the length of the piece here is >longer< than where the cables are, but only by half an inch.
The phony seam is generally shown as pulling one stitch through, then the next 2 together, and so on up the sides. But, what if doing it this way makes the seam area a lot shorter than where the cables are? Has anyone out there drawn up, say, two single loops followed by two picked up together, or some other combination?

I would definitely add false seams to a silk sweater, particularly one with cables since they add weight as well as stability. The wool in the blend will help temper the silk's expansion, but only so much.

Elizabeth Zimmerman covers this in one of her books. I'm pretty sure NOT the Almanac or Opinionated Knitter but one I've read from the library. Haven't actually used this technique but extra stability for silk sounds like a good idea.
