Finally, the Sirdar Snowflake Teddy Sweater is finished! And I held it up to one of her current sweaters, and it should fit for this winter.
Come on Luann, where is the Dale sweater? Anyone else with really, really old WIPs that wants to finish and brag? If I can do it, you can too!

I have a plastic canvas THING (I think it was a 3-d duck of some sort) that I started when I was 6. I finally, 17 years later, threw it away last week. 1) I can't remember what it was supposed to be. 2) I didn't have the instructions, extra yarn, or extra canvas. 3) It's time to move on!

Great topic, Debra! Shortly before Christmas, I finished a sweater which I started in 1987. Ha, I know, how lame is that. I don't even remember why it got stuffed in a box, why I didn't continue on it. Of course, I hadn't written anything down on it, which is unusual for me, I tend to be very anal when it comes to keeping journals or written documentation. There it sat in a box all this time and I had a devil of a time figuring out what was going on as it has 37 rows of pattern stitch. Sometimes I think I enjoy putting these WIPs away and then trying to figure out what I was doing. I have a few more of those oldies that I intend to take care of this year.

Well you all make me feel so much better. My aran cardigan that needs steeked!!! eeeek=steeked! just sits there. I always seem to find something else to do ...I just can't imagine cutting it but if I ever want to wear it I gotta do it... it has only been sitting since late Fall.

Oldest WIP? Not telling! I must go pull them out and frog them all - then I wouldn't have any, would I!

My oldest is not a knitting project, but a printed needlepoint canvas. It is from a painting called "Mares and Foals" by an English painter. I had been admiring it for several months, and when I finallybought it in February 1988, the clerk gave me her employee discount! I very quickly stitched the horses and landscape, except for the sky. For some reason I decided that I MUST stitch the sky outside. Every time I started the sky, I decided it just didn't look right! I kept going into the shop, and became a bit of a running gag for the staff! This summer I must finish it and finally get it framed.
My oldest WIP is the back of a baby sweater, a pastel FairIsle knit on 2.5mm needles in pastel cotton sock weight yarn. I think I might just frog that and make something else as I don't know that many breeders LOL!

I just frogged my oldest WIP - it was a mint green sweater that I started in the mid 80s and I have had it sitting in a bag for almost 20 years. I knew I would never wear it so I thought I would frog it and give the yarn to charity; it is a hideous colour but I thought someone, somewhere may find a use for it. So finally I only have 2 old WIP waiting to be finished (about 4 years old) and my current 3 or 4 projects!!
Happy Knitting, Tam

This question brings up my sad tale of woe and it's this: I'M STILL NOT FINISHED MY FAIR ISLE CARDIGAN YET! I know, I know, it's downright embarassing but there it is, the unadulterated truth! Heaven knows, I started the darned thing in August of 2001 and here it is close to 2 1/2 years later and there it sits. The worst of it all is that it's been 3/4 finished for the longest time, but I'm up near the top where the picking up of the neckline, buttonbands, and so on, come in and I'm petrified.
On top of that, I have to CUT it when I'm finished so I keep procrastinating. Maybe this topic will give me a kick start, or perhaps someone can volunteer to just give ME a kick ?
Regards, Patience |

I have just come across a jumper I was knitting for my son when he was 2; he's now 7. It was the last time I tried working in a few colours with bobbins hanging off everywhere. Never trying that again, too much like hard work.
Not sure that it would be worth frogging though because of all the small pieces of yarn...

My oldest project just sits in its basket, mocking me. It's a lace shawl that I made up as I went along, using beautiful handspun, natural dyed yarns, and other special stuff. I lost interest in it and stopped knitting altogether for a few years (!). Most of the yarn has special meaning, the lace is lovely, it's close to being finished...but I don't want to! Sounds like a more-than-knitting issue to me, don't you think? I've been knitting and finishing projects like a crazed woman for about a year now, but I still hear that shawl whispering from the corner.

I have a cross stitch project (a geisha in blues, purples, and gold! I love anything Japanese!) that I bought when Mary Maxim had a huge clearance on needlework kits a few years ago. I hadn't intended to start it then--but it called to me, and I did anyway. I worked on it feverishly for a week or so, then put in back in it's bag to pick up my knitting again.
After reading another thread--sorry, can't remember which one right now--about getting old/tiresome projects done ten minutes at a time, I've gotten it back out and worked on it a little every day. Basically for as long as I can stand to be hunched over that embroidery hoop, which is about half an hour. So I'm definitely making headway again! At this rate, I might have it done in time to have it framed as a Christmas present to myself....
My oldest knitting WIP is actually my Sonnet, which I started in November. I've been pretty good about finishing the things I start, this year at least!

When I returned to knitting about 13 months ago I found my old Rubbermaid containers with all my supplies and two WIPs. Both are pullover sweaters from Vogue Knits in probably 1992 or so. I frogged one, but the other one I spent so long on and am almost halfway through, but just can't get motivated to finish! It's cotton, with a map of the world. The yarn cost me a ton of money. Sigh.

I have that one too, plus the matching pink geisha! But those are relatively new - under 3 years

I guess my oldest WIP is the shawl that I started for my mother 2 years ago and haven't finished yet. But as soon as I finish the mittens I'm working on for entry into the county farm fair for this year that will be my priority. It's beautiful, I love the color, but I had so much trouble with the first half (you knit two halves then attach in the middle) that I became discouraged. It's a dragonfly and water lilly pattern - pictures, not a repeatable pattern, so you have to follow the chart exactly, all the way accross 186 stitches. Hopefully I'll be inspired after our retreat, where Joan Schrouder is speaking about lace and we're learning to do faroese shawls. Linda |

It's all relative. My oldest WIP (the one I just tossed) was older than you, and I'm not even on the dark side of my 20s yet. I wouldn't expect you to have really old WIPs.
Actually, now that I think of it, I do have a duck in a raincoat needlepoint that I have the yarn for. I really should finish that... It's 17 years old, too.

I must be obsessive compulsive - I can only work on one project at a time. A serial monogamist knitter. I love completing things! It would drive me nuts to know that I had just a little bit more to do. Besides, having a list of things I want to do after my current WIP keeps me moving.
From reading everyone else's posts, this makes me the odd one out. I've only been knitting for a year though, so perhaps it's something I'll learn - juggling multiple projects.

Wow, my husband Emailed me that when he dropped her off this am, she stated her coat itched (nylon ski jacket) and so she walked into school coatless (it was 15 degrees). Anyway, a teacher and another child told her how cute her sweater was! Maybe that will make up for this morning, when she put it on and said it pocked her, and I found I had forgotten to remove a pin!

Yeah, maybe! But the ones I'm thinking of may be about 20 years old or more! Time for a new lease of life, I'm sure.
