I knit during lunch and during telephone conferences if it's something that doesn't require note taking. I envy those of you who have more time at work to knit. Very lucky.

I just started bringing my knitting in with me to work on during lunch. I am a research assistant who works in a lab, so I can't work on it during regular hours. However, I was really wondering if I would have enough yarn to finish a scarf for my son yesterday, so I got out the scarf, weighed it on the very nice balance (scale) we have in the lab, weighed the yarn, and decided I was right -- I needed more yarn.
But don't we always need more yarn???

Hell Yes!
For the first time in my life I have a boss who isn't a complete nightmare, and I feel comfortable whipping out the old WIP to get some real work done. (During my lunchtime, of course). |

I used to work in a VERY small Post Office, (about 120 boxes, no routes). After putting up the mail in the morning, which usually took no more than an hour and oftern considerably less time, I could knit, read, and do crossword puzzles to my heart's content. Since I was the only one in the office, no one could complain. ---- Oh, yes, I sold stamps and did other 'postal stuff', but I rarely was busy with that. In the five and a half years I was there, I made a vest, 2 sweaters, a couple of blankets, some scarves, some baby mittens, some shawls, and a bunch of christmas stockings. I also made a lot of friends...even some of 'the guys' were interested in the complex patterns with which I worked. Never be afraid to knit at work or in public. If someone complains, smile, listen to their argument then present your side. Then, find a way to compromise. Happy Knitting!! barefeet

Yep! I knit on my breaks and on lunch, for a total of about an hour or so. My co-workers have gotten so used to seeing me knitting that they act surprised when I'm NOT knitting. LOL!

I usually knit during my lunch break and sometimes with some other knitters. It really helps to clear my mind.

I knit during meetings. It took people a while to get used to it, but they realized that I was really paying attention. I have trouble sitting still if my hands are not busy. I work on a crisis line and also tutor Hebrew (not at the same time!), so I don't get to knit much at those times. I do knit in public. Chayah in very cold NY, with more snow coming tomorrow.

I teach high school English, and this year I've been devoting my planning periods each day to working at my knitting. I find that this relaxes me and allows me to really clear my mind before my classes begin. My planning period is early in the day, so I knit then, and I also get a few minutes in after I eat lunch in the middle of the day. I have not yet attempted to work on a project during those (boring) inservice lectures, but I think I will give that a try the next time around. Then I won't feel that the day was a TOTAL waste.

I am a former teacher, and have been substituting this year, and have learned to ALWAYS bring a WIP! If it's a high school class and they have a textbook assignment or a test, I can pretty much knit all day. I even have a small flashlight in my bag in case of videos. (Now if it's a junior high class, I have to fight the urge to tie them all up with my yarn and stick them with my needles - and I taught junior high for 9 years, LOL!)

When I worked at community Blood Center we would go out on mobils and i would knit on the way to the site, on the way home, lunch time, and if we were not busy I would knit!

Okay, I hope this doesn't sound stupid (remember I'm a newbie)...
I'm reading that people knit while watching tv, working, etc. can you actually knit without looking at your hands?

I am not able to knit at work, but I do knit while on the bus to and from work. Do most of my knitting at home.

Yes, NuKnitter, some of us can knit without looking at our hands--at least for short periods of time. And you can knit a lot, and watch a lot of TV, with no more than quick glances.

I'm lucky - I can knit or spin during breaks or meetings, and whenever I have a minute or two of down time. My co-workers now routinely ask what project I'm working on, and comment on my yarn and fiber choices.

I substituted and volunteered at our local junior high - as far as I'm concerned, anyone teaching 6th, 7th or 8th grades deserves hazardous duty pay! Now I work full-time at a national laboratory, and some of our scientist and engineer types remind me of those days at times (grin)!

All the time on simple stockinette or a repetitive rib pattern. Ditto the plain rows in lace. I do have to look at the pattern rows a bit more, or at the tricky parts of my knitting - shaping, etc. But we have satellite TV with a recorder, so I can always pause the program and pick it up when I'm past the tricky part!

When I was at my previous job as a legal secretary, I did not have enough to keep me busy at work. On one of my breaks, I went for a walk and past a soon to be open knitting store. So when it opened, I went in and bought all the items necessary to teach myself how to knit. I knitted at work on a regular basis until I left that job and went to a different law firm. Now I don't have time to knit except at lunch.

Yes. I've knit in the dark of movie theaters. I can do purls and knits without looking, including ribbing. YOs and K2Tog and laces get more complicated. I can even knit while being kissed. Response? "Damn! I can't even get you to drop a stitch!" (and it's not because he's a bad kisser, either...)

It's a matter of one tilting their head up while the other leans down. Needles are out of the way... ;)

I work at a private school where knitting is pretty big among the staff. It's actually my co-workers who taught me to knit! There is always a little tension around knitting here as some administrators think it "doesn't look right" when people are knitting.
A bunch of us used to eat lunch together and knit during our lunch breaks but that has gotten less and less as more and more comments are made by the Head. We've tried to prove to him that this is a GOOD thing - staff and teachers from every division gathering everyday (something that otherwise never happens), builds friendships, helps attitudes, etc. But it still "doesn't look good" to him. So, we now all just knit in our own areas at lunch.
However, we have all held pretty strong when it comes to knitting at meetings where notes are not being taken - if others can doodle on their notepads, we can knit (and boy, do we!)
Knitting is the common bond among many of us - and whenever we pass in the halls we stop to chat about WIPs and yarn deals. And, if it weren't for knitting, I would probably never know anything about what the Upper School students are learning in their Science classes, but since their teacher is a knitter, we chat. How this can be a bad thing is beyond me.
