Hi there bloggers, How wonderful that you are doing an hourglass sweater knit-a-long! Please be sure to note the corrections to this pattern which can be found here: http://store.purlsoho.com/purl/book_corrections
I wanted to post this link on the blog itself, but I don't have a blog so I couldn't. I would be so happy if you could post it for me. thanks! Joelle |

Thanks for the reminder and for designing such a fun pattern! We've added the corrections link to the blog's sidebar. We hope to post WIPs and FOs soon. :-)

Hi!
I am new to the forum.... I am now knitting the hourglass sweater with the same exact Noro yarn and it is going pretty quickly. I am knitting to gauge but am wondering if I am going to have enough yarn. I'm making the smallest size (calls for 8 skeins) and ordered an extra skein of yarn but it looks like I will either skimp by with the 9 skeins or run out. I definitely needed more than the suggested eight. Anyone know if the numbers could be that off for that size?
Thanks, Rena

You know, I'm making the medium, and my gauge is admittedly slightly off, but I wanted just a tad more ease than the size would allow without going all the way up to a large. I ended up buying two extra skeins. I'm at the collar turning round now and am about to run out of the first extra skein, so it looks like I will need a little of the second skein, too, in order to do all of the finishing. I'm sure it's possible that the change in gauge caused some of this, but now that I'm about to use more yarn than even the large requires, it seems to me that the yarn requirements are definitely a bit off, too.

Could some one tell me some of the specifics of this sweater, gauge, suggested yarn and suggested yardage for a medium? I'm thinking about buying the book and some yarn from Purl but want to use the Blue Sky Alpacas 100% alpaca yarn if possible. I know this might requre a change in the number of stitches used if the pattern doesn't call for sport weight. I know I could email Purl but I thought I might get some insight here with knitters who are working on it currently. Thanks.

Gauge is 19 sts/4 in. on size 7, Size Medium calls for 9 skeins (but I recommend at least 10) of Noro Cash Iroha (100 yards, 91 meters per skein).

P.S.
I just finished the sweater last night- the smallest size. I eeked by with 9 balls (it calls for 8), however, I am down to the last tiniest ball (about 10 ft.of yarn in length) to do the finishing. If anyone plans to do the smallest size, I would suggest getting 10 balls so you don't have to sweat the last inches wondering if you will run out. I ordered my yarn online so I was esp. concerned if I would need to get more. Otherwise, the sweater knitted up well and easily (however, you must follow the corrections added on the website.). Good luck to everyone making this pattern!

Hi Everyone!
I just finished my hourglass sweater - i made the 37" size - I did switch my yarn but only needed the 9 skeins (900 yards) that the pattern called for but, it was close!
I always get one extra skein for any project as stores usually take back yarn that is unused - in this case I didn't need it!
Good luck to all of you with yours - it is a great sweater!

I guess the size you did had the most accurate numbers for amount of yarn needed. I was glad I bought that extra ball of yarn for mine, however, it was barely enough. As much as I LOVE this pattern book (LMKG), you really need to check the website and print out the correction page for all corrections. I'm on my 6th pattern from that book and each pattern has had something not quite right about it. They still are great designs with beautiful yarns worth doing.

Before I go buy the book, I have a few questions. 1. Is this simple enough for a new beginner, can knit, purl, cast off, etc.
2. What is the time limit for finishing the sweater?

It isn't that difficult to knit. In fact, it's pretty easy. Do you have a knit shop nearby (or a friend that is an experienced knitter) you can ask questions of if you need it?
You basically need to know how to knit, purl, ssk, K2 tog. I think "ssk" is described in the book. There is also sewing down the hems. It went quickly for me (10 days- 2weeks) but I've been knitting a long time and am pretty fast. If you are a very slow knitter you may want to stick to smaller projects until you gain speed.
If you do decide to try it, you want to make sure you make a good gauge first so you will have an accurate fit. If you get the same yarn, make sure you get two extra balls. I used that much more when I made the small size. (see other postings)
If you have any questions you can also email me!

Those of you who have finished the sweater, did you have an issue with the sleeves? One of my blog buddies found them to be miles to big as written, and she was curious as to why they needed to be hourglass shaped as well as the body.

Hi PattiG,
The sleeves did not come out long for me - they hit just at my wrist. As for the hourglass shape of the sleeves, I suppose they don't have to be hourglass shaped but, they look great with the hourglass shape of the sweater!

It's funny you should say this about the sleeves--mine were perfect until I washed them and then when drying I guess I stretched them out too long--they covered my hands entirely! I ended up <gasp> cutting off the extra length and re-knitting the hem going down. I just assumed it was my stupid mistake in stretching them too much, and I still suspect that it was. I also wish I had gone for less ease, because I'm unhappy with how it bunches near the shoulder. And despite the fact that I knit a few extra rows at the neckline, I feel a little too flashdance when I wear it--it keeps falling off my shoulders! Oh well, you knit, you learn.

I found the neck to be a little too open, too. I ended up sewing in a piece of the yarn across the front and back to gather it slightly in. I also did it across the shoulders, too.

I was thinking about doing this sweater up in Rowan Linen Drape. Of course, I don't think I've ever substituted yarn before...so I could use some advice and guidance in whether this is a feasible substitution!
Rowan Linen Drape is described as: * DK or Sport Weight * 22 - 24 Sts/ 4 inches on 3 - 6's * 109 yard /50 grams/ 1.75 oz/ ball
And as someone said earlier in the thread, this sweater calls for the Iroha which comes 100 yds/skein, 19 sts/ 4 inches on US 7.
I would be making the small - 37" finished chest. (Assuming the sizes are xs, s, m, l and xl.)
Can anyone help me with the knitting math here?
