DYEING WITH "JELLO"

You might well ask why would you want to dye with "Jello"? Well there are times when you might want to dye just a small amount of fiber quickly, or you need an activity to entertain the kids for a morning. This is when "Jello" dyeing comes into its own. It's fun, easy, and quick. Unfortunately it only works on protein fibers - wool or silk. You will not get very satisfactory results using synthetic fibers or cotton.

WHAT YOU NEED
1 package of "Jello"
1 liter of water
125 mls of vinegar
5 mls of salt
50 grams of a protein fiber. This can be fleece or a skein tied loosely in four places
A bowl that is safe to use in a
A microwave oven
WHAT YOU DO
Put the water in the bowl, add "Jello" and dissolve.
Stir in vinegar and salt.
Add fiber. Make sure it is floating freely, and covered by the liquid.
Put the bowl, loosely covered, in the microwave and process on high for 5 minutes.
Remove the bowl from the microwave, and let it stand, covered, on the counter for 8 hours.
Gently rinse the skein in warm water; gently squeeze out the excess water; hang to dry, and admire your work.

NOTES
The fiber needs to stand in the bowl for the long period to absorb all the dye, but after the long wait you will have a skein of wool in a lovely soft color. I especially like Berry Blue which gives a greenish blue.

Children must be supervised when using a microwave

what about the sugar? or do you use sugar free jello?

Does this fade when washed the first time? Sounds fun! I think I'll try some tonight. I always have Jello in my cupboard. I have 6 skeins of Natural colored Lorna's Laces Sport Weight yarn to make my own colored sock yarns. I think first I will stick to single colors until I'm comfortable w/ dyeing wool. Thanks for passing this on. I appreciate your willingness to share.

it will still be sticky if you use sugar free jello, that just has aspartame instead of sugar...

Koolaid has the same dyes as jello in it, and you can get it in the little packets with no sugar. So do the dyes they sell for coloring cake frosting...which reminds me, I was going to look for a good purple...grape koolaid just isn't doing it for me...

Maybe this thread would be read and responded to more if it were in the Dyeing section - mostly spinners come here.

My toddler pulled a bowl of jelly on her poncho and it now has red patches all down the front of it, so I can tell you quite by accident, that it works!!

Sounds like a fun idea, but I just wanted to point out that it looks like you're claiming those words as your own, Vanessa! I know you said you got it off the net, but you might consider putting attribution in the original post, or the one who wrote that out might get upset -- better safe than sorry!

I heard that the colours come out weaker.. I guess there is less concentration of colour in jello than in kool aid (maybe)?
Grape kool-aid comes out almost brown for me, busy hands.. i find making my own purple a better bet - mix pink (or cochineal) and blue dye or red, pink and blue. gives nice purples and violets
