With a new membership to Rowan, I recently received a free pattern and four 50 gm balls of Rowan "Cork" in the mail. I don't like the free pattern (it's Freda, the mini poncho kit) and have done some research for other Rowan Cork patterns with this amount but am not coming up with anything. I like the way the yarn looks - it looks like it's been chain crocheted. And it's 95% merino wool, 5% nylon polymide. Hmmmmmmmm - a felted "something"?
Have any of you worked with this yarn? Ideas for 480 yds of it?

I wonder if the nylon would stop (or at least drastically screw up) the felting process?
Perhaps a fun bag, or vest, or hat/scarf or mobius, or....

Me, too -- got 4 balls of Cork, like the yarn, don't like the pattern.
I am thinking about doing a simpler capelet: adapting Ann Budd's Grand Plan capelet pattern in the Spring (?) Interweave Knits, or adapting the pattern for Phoebe (Goddess Yarn) at the beginning of that same issue -- having to play some with the gauge. Or Teva Durham's simple capelet pattern at loop-d-loop
http://www.loop-d-loop.com/productspages/wraps/hc.html
which, again, would require changes to get gauge. (I would wait for her book to come out, rather than buy the pattern individually.)
Or, maybe, try the brimmed hat made from Yorkshire Tweed in the winter or fall IK?
What other ideas did you get???? |

Or you could sell the yarn on e-Bay like most of my friends who have got the kit and also don't like it. I only know one person who has made it and it looked like an interesting knit but if I wore it I would resemble a pilchard looking up through a stargazy pie...

Now you have some idea just how good I would look in that poncho....
I'm feeling a bit guilty now that Vi and I have been dragging fish heads all over your very sensible question like a couple of wayward cats, Sue, so I will pull myself together and attempt a serious answer.
I think it would make a really good...
Cushion cover Hot water bottle cover (I especially like this idea...) Child's jumper or jacket Hat and bowtie scarf.
Hope that's helpful...
Jane - off to chase paper and string....

How about a sling for cats? I've meaning to make a hammock for them...I got the same subscription, yarn and the same ugly pattern. I think either hammock or socks. Chia |

Amie, most of my felting books say the yarn has to be at least 85% wool. The 5% in this yarn shouldn't affect the feltability.

I got the same thing and had the same reaction to the pattern. Cork is a pretty and expensive yarn though so I was happy with the "gift" anyway. I am either going to do knit bag, or use the Cork as a stripe in a pullover sweater. I could do the whole thing in Cork sort of like this: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter02/PATTmarc.html but looking at the Cork book I think I would like it better as a stripe in something slightly more fuzzy, like a "typical" plied wool. Love to know what you decide! |

You Sillies! You had a good romp through this thread, but in spite of all detours and giggles, I got some ideas. I may try the Chicknits scarf. No kitty hammock for me! Thanks for your ideas!

Sure looks like my cat made that gross pie! It is exactly the way he'd do it, complete with *kneading* a lot around the edges...true his rubbery finger pads are smaller, but I think it would come out about that way...besides, I don't think he'd be so offensive as to bake the little fishies, he'd be like Gollum and not "ruin the conies", but eat them raw...ok, so he'd rip them out of the pie...but, he does play with his food a lot...he's a terribly successful hunter...thus, he is permitted to be an indoor cat 99% of the time!
Sorry, I really digressed from the topic of the thread, but you guys started it!

I'm glad this topic got bumped. I went to see "Ladies in Lavender" a couple weeks ago and darned if they didn't make a stargazy pie! I almost jumped out of my seat yelling "stargazy pie!" I had never heard of it before reading about it here. Since I don't like fish anyway, it looks really repulsive to me.
