After much reading (and enjoying) these forums, it is finally time for me to post something!I am making the hooded kaftan from Debbie Bliss' book Special Knits. This is the first sweater i have made and of course i had to choose one with a hood. I took the pattern and my work so far into my LYS and she couldn't understand it either. i checked for an errata and there was none. so here goes. i have made the back of the sweater and cast off all stitches. the front has sort of a v neck. knit halfway up then knit back and forth on ~half the sts to shoulders and place the live sts on a holder. then rejoin the yarn CO 3 sts then knit back and forth on the other side until the shoulder leaving the sts on the needle. here is where i get stuck. It then says "join shoulder seams. With right sede facing, k across 13 sts from right front spare needle, cast on 41 sts, k across 13 sts from left front needle. 67 sts. cont in st st and work 3 rows". it then has me increasing every 5th row 9 more times so that makes the hood. I guess i just don't understand the "join shoulder seams" If the back ones were live sts i would understand, or if i had to pick up 41 sts (rather than cast them on) this would also kind of make sense. in the finishing instructions it says to join hood seam. so i could just ignore the "join shoulder seams" and see what happens. i'm confused Sorry this is so long, but any help would be appreciated

I see what you mean. At first I thought they wanted you to do a three-needle bind off, but since you cast off the back shoulder st, you can't do that in the conventional way. Is it possible to knit the shoulders together using the live st and the bound off shoulders, almost as if you were picking up st? Then pick up 41 along the back of the neck (where the v on the front is) and then do the other shoulder like the first.
That makes some sort of sense to me, but I don't have it here in front of me, of course. |

that is the same train of thought that i was on, but if i was just going to sew the shoulders together, why not bind them off first? and you would think the difference between casting of 41 and picking up 41 would be in the errata, the book has been out a while. i'm not sure, but i don't have any better ideas
thanks for the quick reply

| Did anyone figure out how to make this blasted thing? I am so irritated right now I could scream! The directions for the hood are sooo unclear! |

I wouldn't mind some advice here too... I just discovered that book and fell in love with that caftan... I did skim over the instructions that thought they were a little confusing..

I did actually finish this sweater, but not without a lot of (little) temper tantrums and a few bad words! Where it says to join the shoulder seams i took it to mean put the 2 shoulder seams for the front on one needle. you then knit accross the (wearer's) left shoulder, cast on the stitches for the hood and then knit the right shoulder. I knit my hood to the specifications listed, but it was WAY too big to fit in the "hole" that was left at the back of the sweater and i ended up ripping back many inches. and after a little fudging the freakin thing did fit. After all this frustration, my son has already outgrown it! I hope this helps

| This may be too-little too-late, but I'm in the process of working on this sweater, and I've tried to make some clarifications to the pattern on my blog: http://www.lhoffman.com/archives/101 |
