Yesterday I took my kids over to my sister's house, and we ended up taking mine and hers all over to swim in the neighborhood pool. I didn't have my suit, so I just sat in the shade and spun.
Well, it didn't take 2 minutes before the other Moms there were coming over to see what I was doing. One lady in particular called all her kids over to show them. And one little girl was so intrigued that I gave her a little bit of fluff and taught her to make her own little piece of yarn (pool water sets twist beautifully, by the way).
Luckily, I'm not at all a shy violet and I love teaching (you should have seen their faces when I told them that every thread woven into Columbus' sails was probably spun on a spindle), so I had a blast.
Then, I went to Payless Shoes with my daughter and took out my spindle while she tried on every shoe in the store. I ended up meeting a woman whose daughter spins, but only on a wheel. She'd never seen a spindle before.
Any of you have any interesting spinning in public (SIP) stories?

I was at a park with my family. Another family showed up, a mom dad and two kids. The kids were playing with my son and the adults were sitting at a picnic table near us. I was spinning. After a while, they asked me what I was doing. The woman said her husband was staring and when she told him "why are you staring? That's so rude!" he responded "But she's doing something interesting!" I ended up demonstrating what I was doing and showing off my knitting, including the socks I was wearing, and the ones I was knitting (which I am wearing now). They were quite impressed. I felt great.

Actually it’s almost rare that I don’t get questioned when spinning in public. I’ll pull out the spindle at the time clock if I show up a minute or two early. Sometimes waiting for the elevator, at the dentist office just about anywhere. I made a leather tool pouch for the Harley that is rather heavy leather (8 to 9 oz) it protects the Golding and holds a bag full of roving or rolags and it is easy to carry around so I’ve been using it for that.
We went to a motorcycle "chopper" show up in North Carolina about 2 weeks ago and I was spinning around the camp fire. Tattoo Marty's Wife was fascinated, she had never seen it done before.

I have to say, Mike, that I love your leatherwork (as well as anything else I've seen that you've made). Are there any resources that you recommend for learning that? Not that I need another craft...

Sure, I can recommend a few places. First you want to find out if there is a Tandy or a Leather Factory in your area. There are others like Leather Crafters, Hide Crafters and such.

I was spinning at the Performing Arts Center waiting for the concert to begin. After several minutes, a woman about 3 rows behind me asked, "Excuse me, but what are you doing to that yarn?" I replied, "Well, actually--I'm making it." She said "I thought so, but didn't know anyone still did that!" She was quite interested & I showed her the process while DH kept up a running monologue about the type of fiber I was using, things I've knit with handspun yarns, the different tools that can be used to spin (drop spindle, support spindle, great wheel, flyer wheel, etc.)
And yes--I put the spinning away when the concert began :-)

It was a joy to behold Bess spinning away on her spindle, attracting rapt attention from young and old, male and female, one evening as a bunch of us waited to be seated for dinner. She is a fabulous goodwill ambassador for the craft!

I seldom go anywhere without my knitting or spindles ( depending on which one is nearby) and when I'm spinning in public I get questions about 90% of the time. I just teaching people about spinning and how yarn is made and how long it's been in existence. I love spinning.[blush]

It's true - I am an incurable SpinnerInPublic. and even among other fiber enthusiasts, even other spinners, a crowd is drawn to a drop spindler. How far back does the species memory go when when sparked by the twirling whorl as it draws fiber right out someone's very finger tips? I like to keep a spindle with me most of the time because you never know when you'll make another convert.

I SIP all the time - in public, at work, waiting for whatever, whenever... I tell people that while I can spin more yards of yarn per hour on the wheel, I get more yardage in a week of drop-spindling because it's so portable. And it's a magnet for people. I've met more lovely folks by spindling while I wait for something! Bess has a point - I think it's a 'memory' that is literally transmitted in the genes! It's also the best way I ever found as a substitute teacher to calm a classroom. I simply sat in a chair at the front of the class and began spindling. After a couple of minutes I had quiet, attentive youngsters. It didn't seem to matter what the age might be - it worked as well on pre-schoolers as on high-schoolers! Not to mention the calming effect on the spinner!

I used to spin at all the shows a friend and I went to. It passed the time between customers and got a lot of people who came in closer to see what it was that I was doing. Teenagers were the most intrigued. It's a lot of fun to tote the spindles. They go everywhere, even to the Hopi rez on Second Mesa one October in search of their spinners. Spindles are used there only for ceremonial cloth now I was told and that seems sad. They used to be the premier cotton spinners in their ancient corner of the world.
