if you want to do you own on twill tape, type what you want them to say on the computer, then print that page out. tape your twill tape (or whatever) over where the print out is on the page, then run the page through your printer again, and voila, print on twill tape. it will last for at least a few years, but if you have an epson or an hp photosmart, it's archival and will last for almost ever.
I usually put labels in all of the garments that I make for gifts, except for scarves. A friend recently received a knitted gift from me and was upset that I did not include a label. I have them all well trained!
