They're the best. Lantern Moon and Susanne's ebony needles are nice, but Holz and Stein are my favorite. They have a heft and a feel the others don't have. I only have one set and so now it is my quest to find more. Must. Have. Them.

They are supposed to be very good but also very difficult to obtain outside of Europe. The only place I know that carries now is Catherine Knits:

I've not used their dpn's but have a few pairs of straights and just love them - the heft and the points are wonderful Susannes will do, but they aren't the same.

I just received my order from Catherine's Knits this week. I had ordered three circular needles (I rarely use dpn's). The needles are phenomenal. I'm doing a laceweight cashmere scarf on an pair of size 4's right now. I have both rosewood and ebony of the Holtz and Stein. She may still have some although when I ordered last week, it sounded like she was running quickly out of sizes. (She had gotten in a backorder of the needles....the backorder was dated from 1999).

can't wait to see these! would one of you post a photo of your beautious gems??? meanwhile, I too will send my german-born husband on a quest to find them. I'll let you know if he does. Ebony is a very heavy wood to the best of my knowledge - and I've never heard of needles made from stone.. has anyone? I am a needle nut too, and LOVE having great needles... it totally makes the knitting project in my opinion.

Catherine is out of ebony dpns, but I did get two sets of circulars. I prefer the ebony over rosewood. I should see if my friend stationed in Germany will find me some. Of course he might get a little weirded out having to go in a yarn shop, but he's an Army man, he can do it. ;)

I have a pair of size 7 circulars, and two pairs of 3mm dpns (sock size and glove size). They are, without a doubt, the nicest needles I've ever worked with. My needles are ebony - they make them from the wood left over from the production of clarinets and oboes.
I got my 7s from Catherine Knits, and she was fast running out of needles a month ago. I got the dpns from a friend in Germany. :-)

Ebony. Ahh, I thought since the company was named for the German words for wood(holz) and stone(stein) that's what the needles were made of. Oops!

I ordered 2 circs - one rosewood and the other ebony. The dpns that she had in stock started at 3.25 which is larger than I use. The circs will work for shawls or baby blankets. I can't wait to see what these needles look like. If they are as good as Lantern Moon I'll be happy esp since Lantern Moon doesn't make circs. Right now I'm using a Susanne's ebony circ to make the Ab Fab throw.

Teyani~ If you find those dpns, snatch what you can and let us know. As you see, I'm not the only fan. I'd love to have any of the sizes, but particularly 3.75mm and under.

I'm going to be going to Munich with a couple of knitting friends for a weekend of light shopping at the end of the month. I'll have a good look round then. In the meantime if anyone can recommend any yarn shops in Munich I would be really grateful but my bank account won't...

Dear All
I got lucky! Managed to get a set of the ebony in 3mm and rosewood in 4mm in the wool department of Ludwig Beck, which is a large department store near the Marienplatz in Munich. They had a few sets and some circulars. So Cameellie, if you army friend is anywhere near Munich, if he fortifies himself with a good mug of gluhwein from one of the stalls in the Christmas market he'll be able to brave the yarn department. They were in a little pot on the counter at the far end in front of the sliding yarn shelves.

I ordered some circulars from them last week and commented on it in another thread under Tool Talk/Needles. If you email them, be patient as sometimes it takes a couple days to get a response. They take PayPal. Suzanne reads and writes English and was easy to communicate with.
It will be interesting to see how long it takes to get the needles.
