I tried to download the demo but am having some problems. Has anyone used this software to design their own cable patterns? I am not interested in intarsia, but would like to buy it if it is good for cable designs.

It is charting software, whether stitch, cable, intarsia or Fair Isle patterns. I have used it to design intarsia charts, and to re-chart an existing cable chart for a different gauge. I have found it very helpful.

You might also want to look into Aran Paint. It's meant for cables, and there's a demo. Like most programs the demo isn't fully inclusive of what it does, but I use the demo for a lot of things.

I bought the Stitch & Motif Maker from Knitpicks (where it was a lot cheaper), and it is great! I'm having a great time playing around with it, and actually managed to design the cable motif for a vest I'm planning. It's pretty easy to get to know. I need to get more familiar with the different cable symbols, but nothing a little trial and error can't fix.

I've had SMM for some time - the original, now V3. It's a very versatile program for charting. I hate those line by line patterns and always chart them. Sometimes the printed chart is so small, and/or the symbols are specific to that publication or designer. I just rechart it, enlarging if necessary, and print out my new chart. Another of my irritations is when there are several charts spread over two or three pages - are we expected to refer back and forth? I just chart out the whole thing in SMM. If one is 8 rows and another 24, its easy to copy and paste the 8 row chart right alongside the 24 row. I've just started my first lace project and the whole thing is written out row by row and in Shetland Island terminology (cTc means yarnover, K2tog, yarnover - and that's the easy one!). I've charted the border, as well as the first 25 rows of the body. I think I'd have given up without SMM.
