Now that Thanksgiving is over I'm starting to think about holiday baking and what I'd like to do this year.
Old Favorites 1. Crescent cookies 2. Sugar cookies with green/red sugar 3. Peppermint bark (with chocolate layer on bottom of course!) 4. Mini chocolate peanut butter cups
Some New Ones 1. Anise seed cookies (frosted and sprinkled with nonpareils) 2. Cut-out sugar cookies using a cookie press
What are you making this year? |

normally I start with gingerbread man and women then butter cookies maple leaf cookies sugar cookies eggnog cookies snickerdoodles ( cause EVERYONE loves them) and press cookies if I am really feeling ambituous.... peanutbutter cookies and thumb prints
I really should bake mom's chocolate chip cookies.... they are legendary.... a dark dough with so many nuts and chips that there actually is very little cookie. but I hate chocolate and the recipe calls for 10 pounds of flour 3 pounds of white sugar
see what I mean???
who the hell is going to EAT all them damn cookies? ( they do keep forever and everyone loves them but you really can only eat one or two at a time)
vi who could use a hand in the kitchen **hint hint***
none of this will matter in 100 years....... except I will finally be at my goal weight...vi http://notashyviolet.blogspot.com/ ~now with chickens!

The traditional Christmas sweets in our house are:
shortbread jam thumbprint cookies Hershey's kisses in peanut butter cookies frosted sugar cookies lemon bars chocolate peanut butter candy
I haven't made in several years but might this year, peanut butter cookies that look like reindeer. Mini pretzle twists for the antlers, a red hot nose and raisin eyes. My 5 and 3 year olds would have fun making them, I think.

This year, I'm adding the Danish chocolate-hazelnut cake I made for the first time this weekend. Heavenly. Well, and the woman who makes it moved to California, so it's the only way we can have the cake.
I'll also make: chocolate chip cookies Mexican chocolate cookies My great-Grandmother's Almond cake Cinnamon rolls Pumpkin pie Cheesecake
And this year, a friend and I want to make ginger-bread Stonehenge. Cuz someone has to.

I made this Fall Apple Bavarian Cheesecake for the first time for Thanksgiving. It was a huge hit. My daughter-in-law said she was dreaming about coming home and eating some cheesecake all day at work. It is easy to prepare, and can be made ahead of time.
I used storebought graham cracker crusts, light cream cheese, and less than a whole apple (Washington State Golden Delicious...mmmmm!) per cheesecake.
Funny thing, as I was going out the door, the paper bag with two of these in it broke, dumping the cheesecakes upside-down in the freshly fallen snow. Well, I grabbed them and quickly brushed the snow off, and nobody knew the difference (whew).

vi, if you hate chocolate what about using white chocolate or butterscotch chips?
I make gingerbread cookies year round but make them extra spicy for the holidays. I am not making tons of stuff this year becasue we will be gone for two weeks. I actually went to a craft show and bought $150.00 worth of cookies from the Mennonites to give as gifts to hubby's family.
For my own family I will make:
Zitronen Ringen - a zesty lemon cookie Springerle - anise flavoured keksy - a Slovak sugar cookie makovnik - poppy seed filled bread orechovnik - nut filled bread butter tarts - national delicacy Empire biscuits - sugar cookie with almond icing

I would be blasted from the great beyond if I messed with momma's recipe and bernie would NEVER forgive me
( you think my dead parents nag the sh*t out of me now..... oh my..... them cookies are SACRED in our family)
so it is easier not to make them besides the recipe makes a gazillion of them and I have NO place to put them
( the notes on them start with 'wash a white sheet, and spread it on the big bed')
besides I think what I do now is more then enough no???
I will also sometimes make popcorn balls and occationally nut brittle
carole, my friend from the goaties....she makes chocolates...
bernie loves her chocolates he can get his chocolate fix over there

Caramels Candied pecan's Some sort of brittle, maybe cashew this year. Truffles, probably raspberry, mint and white russian And I always pick a new recipe to try, I'm thinking Molasses chews this year.

This year will not be as busy as most. So far, I am planning to bake: Vanillekipfeln (Austrian Almond Crescents) Pecan Tassies (tiny one-bite pecan tarts) Gingerbread cookies (for the kids) Sugar cookies (DH's fave) Eight-Trick Butter Cookies and I'll also make a few batches of peanut brittle. I love holiday baking, but I sure do wish these things had fewer calories!

Vi, would you be willing to share your eggnog cookie recipe? And I'm going to make cookies for a cookie exchange, but I can't decide which cookie to make- maybe molasses-oatmeal? Or ginger snaps?

DH will be making his traditionally awful sugar cookies. Try as I might, I can't convince him to find a new recipe. Ah well.
I'm also going to make: fudge turtzels gingerbread cookies cinnammon rolls puppie chow gourmet-like caramel apples millionaire shortbread ?
I'm still working on the list! I LOVE this time of year, and I LOVE to make candy and bake cookies. I try to do as much as possible because I get the pleasure of making it - but it goes out the door so that I'm not constantly exposed to temptations.

1/2 pound unsalted butter ( two sticks) 1 cup superfine sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup eggnog 1 egg 2 1/2 cups bleached all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon rum flavoring or light rum
cream the butter with the sugar then beat in the eggs and the flavoring
sift the baking powder with the flour and the nutmeg
mix the wet with the dry
I refridgerate it a couple hours then roll it out and cut it with cookie cutters

I like it just coloring around the edges.
