What is that I see next to my Joy??? Why it's a Lendrum Folding Double Treadle! How'd that get there??? You know I was just fine with my Ashford Joy. Of course I am. Really. Until I found a loaner Lendrum I could try for the weekend. I of course put the blame on all of you.... I wouldn't think of looking at another wheel.

Well of course blame us. Though I STILL (after a grand total of 2 or 3 weeks of spinning) can't see getting another wheel. I understand that this is setting me up for a group horse laugh when I decide another is a necessity. At the moment, I just feel the need for 5 or 6 bobbins. And LOTS of different fiber. Of course I have been looking at the Majacraft site a lot this weekend. I would love to spin a smooth, fine yarn.... can't blame my wheel though, not yet anyway.

They`re pretty rare over here...never seen one, don`t know a UK stockist, never seen a Lendrum in the flesh. I know though that one of our Guild members is getting one as her third wheel, and it might be here for the Guild Open Day in March. Most of the Guild have Ashford Travellers as their travelling wheels. There`s a healthy second-hand market for Ashfords. And as houses are smaller over here there is less scope for multiple wheels. Even I would hesitate to buy a Saxony wheel on grounds of space, and I`ve got a bigger house than many people. (Scruffy, though!) However castle wheels are the traditional shape here anyway, so most folk just have one. For a while, anyway!
You do however really only need one wheel surely....the one you`re sitting in front of at that exact point in time? and then tomorrow, you might need something else!

that's what I was told.....
I have a tiny house...
so I can't have a huge wheel..... a castile wheel is it for me....
( i do have a secret lust for an irish castle wheel and a conneticut chair wheel however....)
I tried to spin on one of them cinderella wheels....( why do they call them that....when it was SLEEPING beauty that did herself in with the wheel)
anyway I am no where nears TALL enough to spin on one of them...
maybe I would need the oriface on the right?
but damn
they are HUGE
too big for my humble little cottage

You only have *two* wheels? You poor thing. . . I've got three at the moment: an Ashford Elizabeth for my main wheel, an Ashford Joy for taking to work, on vacation, etc., and an antique double-drive wheel of unknown origin for looking cool in the dining room. It's functional, but the treadle is so heavy (being solid metal)and the drive band so determined to jump off the flywheel that I don't really enjoy using it. But as I said, it looks really cool, so I'm unlikely to part with it any time soon, even if it is taking up a lot of space.
However, at a recent Renaissance-type faire a woman there was kind enough to let me try her double-treadle Lendrum. Sure was nice. . . might have to get one. . .

I must then fess up to my third wheel. At my parents house, keeping it nice and safe, is my Great Grandmother's spinning wheel. Dated by the builders and in Norway. Plus a photograph of her spinning with it. Pre-turn of last century (dated March of 1890, we have lots of years between generations). My Dad's scanning the picture and I'll post it.
But wait, remember the Lendrum is just a weekend loaner....for now.

Yup, to work. At lunch I wolf down my "sammidge" and spin away the rest of the hour. Not every day, mind you, more like once or twice a month. Not much space in my cubicle to store it while I'm working.

Yes, one to one for every cat. That works for me too. I'm keeping the loaner Lendrum one more day before the final yes/no decision. Need to figure out where the sqeek is coming from about hour 2 into test spinning. Hubby (who took spinning classes at the Mannings with me in 1990) asked if he could have Joy as his own if I buy the Lendrum. Community property state then keeps the ratio at the correct one wheel per one cat.

More oil? Some wheels need oiling on key points after x-hundred yards of spinning. Certainly oil wouldn`t hurt.(Unless you have sealed bearings there.)
(I`ve been reading up a LOT on oiling since I got the Mazurka....)

| Congrats! Glad to hear you like it as mine should be here on Thursday. Just read that it doesn't come with any instructions, though. Since I doubt that I've ever been within 5 feet of a spinning wheel, this should be interesting. |

Hmmm...guess I have to 'fess up too! I just this morning bought yet another wheel! A second-hand Keeves - Little Grace. This is a hand-made wheel which is made in NZ. I guess his wheels could be the equivalent of a Norman Hall wheel - the Rolls Royce variety! They are really expensive to buy new with a huge waiting list. Really rare to find second-hand, so when the opportunity arose to purchase one for $200NZ I jumped at it!
I will hopefully be picking it up after Christmas - I don't really want to make the 3 hour drive (one way) before Christmas. I am really excited, though! Embarrassed as well! This brings the number of wheels I own to six! Two are decorative only (one of these I wouldn't mind selling - it spins well, but my Majacraft is so much more pleasant to use) and one is in pieces waiting for me to finish stripping it down and refinish it ready to sell.

Congrats on the Little Grace wheel. We saw that one one Trademe as well; that was an excellent buy! We have one and absolutely love it. It is worth $950 US dollars so you have another treasure to cherish!
