Hi,
I'm pretty new to knitting socks, on my 3rd pair. This pattern calls for a slip stitch in the heel. For some reason I cannot wrap my brain around the instructions. It says to K1 slip 1 across, knit the last stitch. I have been slipping as if I were knitting with the yarn held in the back...is this the correct way to do this or should I slip as to purl with the yarn held in the back. This is on the right side and then purl across on the wrong side. The instructions don't give any instructions on how to do this. I'm just stumped.

Thanks!
Denise

The general rule of thumb for slipping stitches is that if you're not going to do anything with the stitch on this row *except* slip it, you should slip it purlwise (if you're doing something else, like passing it over another stitch, then slip knitwise). This is the default you should follow unless the instructions tell you otherwise.

For this pattern, the default is correct. You're not doing anything with these stitches except slipping them on this row, so they should be slipped purlwise. If you slip them knitwise, they'll be twisted when you get ready to work them on the next row, and you don't want that.

Thank you so much!
this was driving me crazy...I thought it looked funny. Here I am at work and all I could think about was my sock.

Thanks again.

I have to step up and say - I prefer to slip as if to knit on my heels. I like the twisted stitches :) But then again, we all know I'm nuts...
