I'm collecting people's knitting stories at http://erica-lee.org/knit/story.html. I would love to get each member's story about how they learned to knit and put them into some sort of book. You can email me your story if you like at mailto:knitgrl@erica-lee.org?Subject=knitting story. I love reading about everyone's knitting story on here.

Erica,
Have you seen the collection of knitting stories at about.com? They have several hundred of them. (I can't remember the link right now.) I am sure your book would be much better because a lot of them on "about"are repetitious but there are a few gems in there.

I'm sure this was looked over by many of you so I'm bringing it up again. I want your knitting story! I would love to have a book that's a collection of people's knitting stories. Knitting has such a great history in the world and I'm learning that there is a very rich history here on the forums. Please please email me your story. I'm not going to take any of them off of the forum due to privacy issues. If you want to email me your story, you can at knitgrl@erica-lee.org To see the current stories that I have posted http://erica-lee.org/knit/story.html. I currently haven't put where everyone is from, but it might make it more interesting.

I was just browsing the knitting sites to compare prizes on yarn, when I found this site, and believe me, I'll be back. I have been knitting since I was 6 years old. In Sweden where I grew up we had to learn in school. First thing the whole class made was mittens, and I remember the second becoming smaller than the first one, since after practice I knitted tighter. I'm now 50 and have always had several projects going at the same time. When I read the the stories about the "love-sweater curse" it made me laugh and think about all the sweaters, socks, scarfs I made for Xes, and to some extend I wish I never did waist my time. Before I left Sweden I knitted sweaters for all the guys in my MC-club. That was 17 years ago, and they're still wearing them. I made the sweaters with their bikes color and logo on the front, and their names on the sleeve. I do not regret those, but wish to rip some of my sweaters of a few Xes. When I was 17 an old aunt of mine asked me if it wasn't time to get married, and I jokingly said : The way to a mans hart goes through his stommac, and I can't cook. She looked at me and said : True, but it goes through his feet too, and you can knit, so make a pair of warm wool socks. I did and did get married at 21, but my aunt didn't say anything about forever, so........

Oh, my ... I plumb forgot about this... Sorry, erica!
Here's my story : I taught myself to knit in 1999 with help from my knitting aunts. (My Grandmothers also knit and one tried to teach me to crochet as a child, but it didn't really take.) I decided to learn to knit after witnessing a sheep herding demonstration one weekend at the Scottish Highland games at Grandfather Mountain, N.C. I went back to work the following Monday (as a nurse on a psychiatric unit) and heard a very clear voice in my head saying "This is not where you belong" and realized that I was meant to do is be Farmer Hoggett from Babe. This not being overly practical at the time, and having some insight that doing something with the sheep really meant first knowing how to knit, I went to Earth Guild in Asheville, N.C. and bought Susan Bates' teach yourself to knit book, "Homespun, Handknit" and Vicki Square's "Knitter's Companion," two pair of knitting needles (size 4 and 8 US, still the only 2 pair of straight needles I have), and two skeins of yarn from their sales bin. I still have the very first swatch I made, and I can't imagine how in the WORLD I knit that tightly! My Aunt Elizabeth showed me how to relax my hands a bit and the rest, as they say, is history! :O)

How about telling her what inspired you to want to learn (and my beauty, while a good suck up answer, would not be correct here ) and how you feel about being a guy in a very guy-oriented career who knits in the closet.
"Choose your friends by their character and your socks by their color. Choosing your socks by their character makes no sense, and choosing your friends by their color is unthinkable."

Hi, Theresa: Just a note to say hello and you being a psychiatric nurse you need an outlet such as knitting. Also, nurses being in great demand have you thought of transferring to another branch of nursing. You have one of the most streesful job imaginable. A change of scene would be good for you. Trust me I know from where you are coming. You can't do it on your own. Beverley

Dear Ken,
If you are going to knit in the closet, at least get a new OTT Light and a folding chair.

Hi guys and gals! I want all of your stories - how you learned to knit. If you learned from a book, I want to know. If you learned from a friend, I want to know. If you learned from a relative, I want to know. If you know how to knit and have never made anything, I want to know. If you have made every piece of clothing you own, I want to know. Do you see a theme here? Good, now send me your story!

Bev, Thank you so much! I am truly touched by your concern. Actually, I'm not working at all right now... one of the reasons is that I need more language skills to work as a nurse in Norway and the other is that I'm just plain and simply enjoying not working while I have the opportunity! I agree wholeheartedly that psych nursing is too stressful, especially those days when I was in charge. Good grief. I realize how much more relaxed I am and know I'm healthier. "I miss it like a rock in my shoe"... that's a GREAT line!

I learned how to knit in law school. I had a book of aphgans that I had bought for crocheting. But they had all those pesky knit patterns too, and the prettiest one in there was knit. So I taught myself from the instructions in the beginning of the book. Lucky for me it was a basic feather and fan pattern, or I might have given up with the first skein. I used knitting as a treat when studying. "If I can just get through this boring case from the 1800's, then I will reward myself with one of two rows of knitting." I made that aphgan for my roommate, since a broke graduate student couldn't even afford cheap acrylic yarn. Witht he money that she paid me for it ($20, plus the supplies) I bought more yarn for the smae aphgan, but for me this time. I have been hooked ever since, and that same aphgan is currently draped over my favorite armchair.
