Help!! [crazy] I don't know if it's the pattern or me..http://criminyjickets.blogspot.com/2006/07/garterlac-dishcloth.html. I can do the bottom triangles and even the increasing triangle (though I'm not sure it's in the right spot) when I get to the first square, all he** breaks lose because whatever I've got going on my needles isn't what needs to be happening according to the tutorial. [**] I spent most of last night until after midnight trying to figure it out. Now I'm thinking maybe because I knit differently the pattern should be a lil different. I posted on the kal I'm on so we'll see. I figured I'd try here as well and next I'm going to post on the creator's blog about the pattern. Thanks for hearing me vent.

Here's another version of the tutorial; see if it makes it any clearer.

Terri,
Thanks for your help. I printed this tutorial up as soon as I saw it up and thought the visuals would help but even they aren't helping. Last night, I was in front of my computer, with the pattern on the screen <i>and</i> I was running the slideshow of the tutorial. I'm doomed to not make this dishcloth.

I started and frogged this garterlac dishcloth I don't know how many times. Then one night last week I sat down and cast on one more time and for some reason, it just clicked. I've knit three of them since! It's really quite easy. The big challenge is knowing when and where to pick up stitches. You say you can do the bottom triangles and then the increasing triangle. At that point, you need to pick up stitches for the first square. You pick those up on to the needle that has the increasing triangle and the bottom triangle. Then you knit them, turn, then knit ending with the SKP decrease, then turn again.
I really was quite frustrated with this pattern but once I figured out where I needed to pick up stitches, it became quite easy. One thing that helped me was writing out the full pattern, line by line, so that I could cross each step off as I knit it. Keep on trying. Once you get it, it's really quite fun to knit!

thanks origami! See, I know where to pick up the stitches-it's just the direction my knitting is going that is the problem! Dave, the guy who created the pattern posted back in my kal and said I'm on the right track and explained what needed to happen next (the picked up stitches needing to join with the needle that has the other 2 bottom triangles but for some reason, when I did the square, instead of connecting with the 2nd bottom triangle, my picked stitches connect back up to the increasing triangle. :P I'm going to try again tomorrow and see what I can do! Thanks for letting me know that you also had problems with it. :)

Rhoda, it sounds like you are either skipping the first Knit 8 that comes after you pick up 8, or missing a Turn. Pick up the 8, TURN, knit 8 (which gets you back to the first stitch you picked up), TURN, knit 7, skp, TURN. The first one I made had me stumped at first, simply because I was overlooking the word "turn" in the directions.
You might also try writing out the directions differently and see if that helps. Like: Pick up 8 Turn Knit 8 Turn Knit 7 SKP Turn Knit 8
Sometimes seeing the directions written step by step can make a light bulb come on. |

I know exactly what you are talking about Rhoda. It's the TURN that got me. I picked up the eight where I was supposed to but if I turn then the yarn is halfway down the right hand needle and I the other stitches are on top of those stitches. The yarn isn't in the right place to knit. If I knit the 8 then I end up connecting to the wrong side, like you did.
It seems like on my first one, I picked up the stitches on a crochet hook, like the pictures show, then knitted off that hook and it worked. But it's late tonight and I don't know for sure now. I do know I struggled this weekend with one because I didn't have the pictures. It seems to be working but I also seem to have one row too many on the squares when I pick up the stitches. And yes, I posted in another thread it was easy!
Anyway, did want you to know that you aren't crazy. I had the same problem. Or maybe we both are crazy???? :-)

It sounds like you need to pick up AND KNIT the 8 sts, not just pick them up. That will leave the yarn on the left side of the stitches that you picked up before you turn. When you turn, you'll be in a position to knit across the bottom of the square.

YES! That is where I kept making my mistake too!
Writing out the pattern step by step worked for me. It's really a fabulous pattern but I needed to completely write it out. I also had to use the tutorials too. But wow, did I feel like I'd learned something when I finally managed to knit that thing! |

bogiebogie, where were you all this time??? That is exactly what I ended up doing and that's what made it work!
thank you to everyone that was trying to keep me from pulling all my hair out! I really appreciated everyone's help! It was so nice to be able to talk my knitting problem through. I even tried to make my poor fiance figure out why in the world it wasn't working!! You will be glad to know that I attempted again @ about midnight last night because I couldn't wait any longer and I was determined to get a square done! I think once I'm finished with this one, no more garterlacs for me for a while. I'm still angry @ it!!

Try another one soon Rhoda. That's where I messed up! By the time I started another I'd already forgotten what I'd done! ;-) Of course that could be just plain old age...

Jayme,
Could soon be equated with sometime next year? ha. It'll be awhile before I feel ready to make another garterlac. I think I was more frustrated with this dishcloth than I was with this beanie I made not too long ago! I wrote down what I changed so I hopefully won't forget what I did!

| But they are sooooooooooooooooooo cool! I've made 3 and now am ready for something different. I think if you do several in a row, you'll really have the pattern down. |

They really are cool. I'm on my third but I frogged the second when I only had the top triangles to go after reading the thread and thinking I'd messed up. Turns out I didn't but hey, I needed the practice anyway!

| I have noticed that some people are using more than one color in their Garterlacs -- they're using solid color yarns and alternating colors in each row. How is that color change being done? How is the color switch accomplished? |

are you sure they're not just using variegated yarn? just making sure. if they are using solid colors and alternating colors in each row, I'd like to know how they're doing it also. They are possibly adding the new color @ the beginning of the row where they want a different color.

I found this example: http://knitting.about.com/library/blentrelacinstruct.htm It shows the basic pattern of garterlac but in stockinette, therefore enterlac I guess. And they used different colors.

That is cool!. I think after you finished each shape (triangle/square) you would start off with a new color. You'd cut off say one color, weave in the end, and then start the next shape with a new color. Does that make sense?

That's what it looks like. It would make cute pillows or if you were really ambitious (I'm not!)a blanket! It would be a great way to use up little bits and pieces, don't you think?
