Hi everybody,
It has come to my attention that at least one unsavory individual recently registered for the forums and then used the "email member" function to send equally unsavory spam emails to quite a few members. We've been lucky in our six-year run - this is the first time this has happened on a large scale.
I just wanted to reassure you about a few things.
First of all, I've blocked this member and registered his IP address with the authorities. We know precisely which network he/she is using to access the Internet and I will do everything possible to stop him or her. Or, at a minimum, put a speed bump in his/her way.
Second, I want you to rest assured that your email addresses are still safe. The "email member" feature does not reveal your email address to anyone. It simply allows people to contact you via email through the forums. Your email addresses are not revealed to that person at any point during the process.
If you do not wish to receive emails from forum members (the savory or, knock on wood, the occasional unsavory) just click on "profile" in the upper righthand corner and de-select the "allow forum members to send you emails" box.
And third, I do have a request. A few of you have marked this email as spam and alerted your email providers. Unfortunately, because the email was generated through KR's servers, this will result in OUR being put on the blacklist - which means I won't be able to send out the weekly email newsletters anymore. So please, please, you can alert Yahoo to this unsavory member using their system for illegal purposes - but if you forward them the message, including the original message header that has the mail servers, etc. - it will result in our getting shut down.
We are an open forum, which is to say that anyone and everone is welcome to register and join us. Unfortunately this means that we can have one bad apple out of almost 60,000 good ones. Until we decide whether or not to close membership - which I'd really rather not do - we'll have to run this risk. But rest assured that if you receive an email from a forum member, they do not know your email address. They've just used the "email member" feature to reach you. You can always deactivate that feature.
Thanks everybody for your patience and understanding with this - you're truly marvelous!

Thanks for making us aware of this and of our options, Clara! Can't weed 'em all out, unfortunately!

Dear Clara,
When I alerted my Yahoo e-mail provider, I made sure to let them know that the spam did not originate from KR forum itself, but from someone who used the forum's name and address for their own purposes (they have a comment window available when you report). I specifically asked them NOT to relate KR address or name to a SPAM list and I did not hit the SPAM button either. I just hope that it helps. |

I cruised around and didn't this list topic when I read my email, so I emailed Clara privately.
I'll bet she said bad words when she found this stuff.
But, please, in a lighter vein, explain to me how anyone would be stupid enough to think that some stranger is going to mail you 12 million dollars and split it with you just for nothing. I mean there are lots of legitimate ways to move money around the world. These stories aren't even remotely plausible.
Now if they said they had discovered a tree that grew balls and hanks of yarn in a fabulous wool/silk blend,....they might find a few takers.

Unfortunately for the Yahoo spam markers, I don't know if anything can be done. Perhaps sending an email to the support desk to let them know? We have a lot of Yahoo subscribers, unfortunately. (Or dare I say had?)
Thanks again everybody. I realize how lousy this is.
