I want one knitting book that will have every abbreviation, stitch, technique and proper illustration in it. (By the way, the abbreviations will have detailed instructions.) It will index yarn and needles with critiques of each. It will also not be heavy, will have a ringed binder and will be inexpensive.

I was able to print off 4 pages of abbreviations by going to knittingfool.com on the Net. All for free! I've been able to build up quite a library of basic knits from the Net. Those basics give me an idea of how much yarn to get for just about any basic iten I might want to make for basic charity knitting, leaving my $$ free to buy the snazzy stuff for special items. Hope this helps.

What we need is something like the device that is the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but for knitters.

Hey, that sounds like a great idea! Why don't you create it! You'd have lots of takers here. I might even need two of them! :-)

At the risk of sounding dumb, I'd also like a list of abbreviations that people use when talking here. I know some of the basics and can figure out more, but occasionally people use letters that I cannot puzzle out....am I the only one?

Here's a link to an internet acronym dictionary:
http://www.gaarde.org/acronyms/ it's the most complete one I have seen and should answer your questions about the abbreviations.

I have three binders on the desk next to the computer. One for recipes I print, one for knitting info and techniques and one for patterns I would like to try. One of these days I'll even get around to organizing them with labelled dividers, I hope!
