It better be low-tech or grass roots. I spend my whole day at work in front of a computer (I work at a computer animation studio). One of the reasons I started knitting is that I needed to escape the "hi-tech" world in the evenings. I think of knitting as soothing... and very few hi-tech activities are what I would call soothing. I'm think of all the time I spend building my web site... I did enjoy it (sort of) but it was not soothing.
Amber (wanna be low-techie)

Well...hmmm...despite the high tech often used to create yarns, I'm voting with the grassroots, low tech crowd. I knit to get away from the cerebral computer work I do all day. It's portable, interesting, relaxing, and doesn't require electricity (except that a good light is handy!).

vicky-
animated movies... we did Shrek and Antz :-)
It is a cool job but it does leave me wanting to not look at the computer once I go home for the day.

I vote for low-tech, but that's mostly because that's how I'm involved - the low-tech side. I do feel that there are very high tech aspects to knitting - machine knitting, some designing, some manufacturing, and probably some research into possible new fibers. Good topic, Sarah. It really got me thinking. And Amber, I'm glad you can still bear the computer long enough to join us. Linda
