I'm still fairly new to this forum (only a few months) so forgive me if you all have chatted on this topic...
but I'm interested in knowing what you charge to handspin yarn.
We sell some bombyx-silk 50/50 blend roving that is yummy... and I spin the yarn for myself - well, several folks have now begun to ask to BUY my handspun ( shocking but true!) I am flattered beyond words, and pleased to do it, but I wonder what the "going rate" is out there, as I don't want to over or under charge..... what do you think?

Teyani, you may want to find Web sites that sell handspun and see what they're charging.

thanks Lissa - so far I was just winging it, charging about $2 / ounce. Its a little hard to translate some of the web sites I've seen - I know what some of the roving costs, and they are charging ALOT of their yarn spinning..perhaps I'm just a bit on the low end since I have only done this for about 5 years...
by the way, I got the fiber for Cinixia.. yah hoooooo can't wait to begin spinning it - its pictured on my blog

By $2/ounce do you mean just for the spinning in addition to the fiber? I would time myself and charge at least minimum wage.

I add on $3 per ounce to the cost of the roving. That is really cheap though. But I buy expensvie roving, so that is the only way I can make the yarn cheap enough someone will buy it.

It's a tough balancing act to find a price that's not so low as to make it not worth your while to sell your yarn, and not so high that no-one will buy it. Most of the folks I know who sell their yarn price it by the yard, not the price, but they're also not "professional" spinners, so I don't know if this is a good way to go.

After reading about this topic on a lot of spinninglists, I think, like Lissa, that the most common way is to charge by yard. That way, the customer can see how much "they get" for their money, and it's easy to solve the problem with skeins that differ in weight/yardage.
For yarn spun from more expensive fibers, the price/yard is higher, and usually people charge more for lighter yarn (since it takes longer to spin). Try to set the price high enough to actually make it worthwile for you.
(The lovely silk/merino on your blog is fantastic!! Can't wait to see it spun)

thanks for the input - I normally spin about a worsted weight yarn in this bombyx/merino blend.. and get 75 yards for two ounces. I know I'm not charging enough for my time (its Waaaaaaayyyy below minimum wage) but I figure that since I've only been spinning for 4 years that I'm not ready to charge premium prices yet. The hand dyed roving is fairly pricey to begin with - and with my minimum charge, its ends up being about $25 for the two ounces. (the roving costs $21 for two ounces unspun). I couldn't quite bring myself to charge more for only 75 yards.. call me crazy.. but its true.
the customers also have to wait until I have time to do it.. since I have a "day job" still... so....
But you all have encouraged me to continue honing my skills - and eventually charge more. for now I only do the spinning for a select few folks.

| I think you should go to Etsy, KPixie, and some other sites to see what people are selling their handspun for. You might be surprised at both the price and the quality. Don't sell yourself short! |

And, the time you've been spinning has no bearing on what you should charge. If your yarn is nice - and it is - you charge for nice yarn, whether you've been spinning for 4 years or 4 days.
