I am looking for a pattern to make some lovely, loungey boxer style shorts for my DH, maybe in cashmere or some silky blend of fibers.
They won't be for wearing under long pants, only for lounging about the house or for sleepwear.
something like this... http://tinyurl.com/e9zna
Free or not, doesn't matter. Any ideas?

Someone (that's helpful, isn't it? Maybe Knitters?) had a pair of women's shorts maybe two years ago that might be enlargeable (and add-flappable).
There were also the lounge pants (called "No Sweat Pants" or something close) in Interweave Spring 2004 made in Lion Brand Homespun, also for women, but maybe you could knit shorter legs and size them appropriately.
Just "template" ideas, but I haven't seen anything else that I recall.

Can't help you on the pattern, but I can recommend KnitPick's Shine yarn, which is a blend of pima cotton and modal. It's very soft and breathable, and I think it would make for some very comfortable boxers. And it's machine washable, which is a definite plus for something he's probably not going to want to wear more than once between washings. It comes in sport or worsted weight. If you want something a little more "luxe", there's Cascade's Pima Silk.

Knit.1's next issue has knitted boxer shorts in it. They look like they would work sans the Knit.1 splashed accross the behind.

Bingo! Thanks bftscfirl, those are perfect...
Thanks for the "template" ideas Amie.
...and Wonderclown, Cascade's Pima Silk sounds like a good candidate for this project.
Thanks to all for your great ideas.

I was just looking at a really nice new knitting book yesterday at B&N called "Greetings from the Knit Cafe". A former CBS V.P. opened a knit shop in L.A., and she wrote the book. It's really cute - very unique projects, recipes, etc. Most projects are more complicated, for those of you intermediate/advanced knitters looking for something different.
Anyway, there is a pattern for knitted boxer shorts. The yarn looks like it might be silk or a silk blend. They looked very comfortable.
Here's an amazon link for a description of the book:

Knitted Boxers! I like it! I made DH a pair of socks which have become his house slippers. He's not into scarves, gloves or sweaters so I'm a little limited on things I can knit for him. I know he would wear the knitted knickers even if it just to please me!
