I know exactly what you mean. I have various arthritis-related problems, and will pick up the needles or a drop-spindle when the pain gets bad. It's a distraction, and it's soothing, and it helps my muscles relax a bit. Anything that lessens the amount of pain meds is a plus, both for my stomach and my mind! Unfortunately nothing else is helping today - blowing and sleeting (!) outside, and everything aches!

I know it certainly seems to help, both with physical and emotional pain.

Whenever I'm stressed, I head straight for the knitting and I immediately calm down. It's like being in another world---away from the pain and irritation.

| I find knitting not only helps with physical pain, but mental anguish as well. When I have something that is really bothering me and I just can't get it out of mind I find the most complicated lace knitting project I can and tackle it. |

Helps me too with physical pain and emotional stress. Pick up the needles, put on some good music, even just pulling out a few pattern books . . . it does help. RoseM |

I have been living with Lupus and a nasty little disease called intersitial cystitis. When my body crashes or is in pain, sometimes the only thing I can do is knit. Knitting allows me to feel less "disabled" and allows me to work through the pain, row by row. When the pain is really bad and I can't sit up, I will have knitting projects on the bed. Last spring I needed to have surgery for the IC and a neighbor came by to help out and keep me company. She was a new knitter and asked if she could bring her knitting with her and of course I thought it was a great plan. There I was giving a mini lesson while in bed. For the time we were knitting and learning together I focused more on what I could still do, not what I was unable to do.

If I'm feeling queasy from chemo and "just sit", that minute hand seems to almost stop. Unless I'm feeling really bad, just having the knitting in my lap and knitting a stitch and and a stitch there definitely helps the time pass. In the last 3 1/2 years, I've got a llllooootttt of knitting done.

My DH has mystery nueralgia. I threatened to teach him how to knit last week. I think that I will in all seriousness now that I've read your posts. Thanks!

After a long day at work, it's great to put on the classical music (WQXR 96.3 in New York City)and do a hour or two of knitting. it really does wonders for the physical, mental and spiritual. What ever works for you, do it.

I also recommend keeping a variety of projects at hand. Sometimes it helps to knit something that requires concentration, sometimes all I can do is a garter stitch wash cloth. What I find that I cannot do is to start a project when I am in pain.

| I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia last year and learned to knit to give me something constructive to do when I was having a "bad day" and had to sit or lay down. Now I have the prospect of a hip replacement this summer so I am stocking up on all sorts of projects! Knitting is my best therapy |

I've had degenerative disc disease and sciatica from an injury for six years, needlework of some kind whether it be knitting, crochet or cross stitch helps take my mind of the pain.
I also have been suffering from some mystery illness and have bouts of extreme fatigue, neuralgia and muscle weakness. When it's at its worse it's so hard to concentrate on anything. I do force myself to work on some of project to distract myself.
There is a feeling of accomplishment when you're feeling to crappy to accomplish much else.
