I subscribed to Spin-Off two weeks ago and have already received my first issue! Talk about great customer service. Anyhoo, I'm still perusing this issue which is chock full of goodies (IMHO). I'm most smitten with the yummy full page photo of the latest additions to the Golding family on the back page. Those double points, that lazy kate and *gasp* Habetrot - I want them ALL! I was curious about dyeing with natural dyes and now have a wonderful resource. And I'd thought about Finn fleece as I came across some on Ebay and voila there's an article. I'm in love.

Wow - that is fast! Sounds like a great issue - haven't seen it yet, but I'm looking forward to it!

I got my Spin-Off on Friday of last week, and read it over the wekend. I really liked this issue, loved the article on Finnsheep especially.
I do have to say, though, I REALLY dislike that Golding spinning chair in the ad. I think it is really creepy-looking, with the ballerina feet and all. Reminds me a little of caryatids, and they creep me out a little too (for all you students of archeology out there, it was one of my minors in college). I was having a hard time figuring out the parts of the Kate, too, but maybe it's just a bad picture of it or I'm missing something.
Anyway, I'm still firm in my thought that the only Golding things that I like the looks of are the spindles, not a big fan of the looks of the wheels at all either (though I don't think they are creepy!).

Got mine today. Haven't had time to really devour it yet, though.

I got mine last Friday. I guess I'm the only one disappointed with this issue. The only article that's of much interest to me is the one on solar dyeing.
During the past six months I've been collecting old issues from the 80's & 90's and it seems like they tend to have many more in-depth articles.
And by the way, what's the deal with the big white address box on the front cover? Why can't they use a removable ddress label? I'm now regretting my decision to subscribe.

It does look pretty strange, but I surely would like to get my hands on some of those walnut knitting needles, especially the DPNs.

I guess I should add that I'm still a newbie to spinning and am sucking up any related information like a sponge. So what's new and exciting to me may be boring and mundane to the seasoned spinners out there.

I am so glad that this catagory was alled to the spinners section. I was thinking the other day when I got my Spin-Off that I wanted to post about if but didn't have a place to post it. Thanks Carla!
As for the Golding ad, I am just drooling over the needles, dp as well as straights and the needle case is beautiful, not practical but beautiful. Okay I suppose if you travel and wanted to pack your needled so they won't break then it is practical.
The chair is sort of freaky, I don't like the feet either. It reminds me of something out of the Adams family.
Did you all read about the call for hand cards? It is on page14, what a wonderful charity to give to. |

I enjoyed the articles on Finnsheep and solar dyeing, since I love to spin Finn and wanted to try solar dyeing this summer. It gets a little warmer here in the Southeast, so I don't usually need a solar oven - just black plastic bags on my deck on a sunny hot day!
Generally, though, this wasn't one of my favorite issues. I've noticed something about that, though. It seems that sometimes issues that don't appeal to me at first are the ones I come back to later when I'm trying something new!

Oh, and I have a Golding spindle that I absolutely love. I also like some of the wheels, but I'm not as fond of the look of others. But these wheels are also artistic expressions, and if you look at them that way, you don't necessarily have to like all of them!

I lovelovelove the Golding wheels, but the heads are really disturbing. I'll take the new wheel in the center of the ad...decapitated.

Got my issue yesterday, hooray! The articles were just OK to me, but hey someday I may become interested in solar dying and there the article will be waiting for me.
And the chair. . . the chair is very, very disturbing. Freaky-deaky!

The other chairs are interesting and beautiful but the ballet foot chair is definitely strange. The women's faces seem to be just as strange to me as the feet of the chair.
I'm a new spinner, so I'm looking forward to this issue just for more spinning information and tips.

Haven't gotten my issue yet but as for the chair with feet, it's very reminiscent of the Krinkles that Patience Brewster designs for Department 56. I love the look but question the strength.

Oh, I love the ballet feet! But yes, I hate the heads.
Can I get ballet feet without heads, please?

I agree with you....even though I`m a fairly new spinner, I prefer the tone of the articles in the older issues as well. More serious.
I love the Habetrot wheel. I`m a Celt, so surely I deserve to have one?

I really like the idea of solar dyeing. It kind of reminded me of when my brother and I tried cooking hot dogs in a little shoe box coated in tinfoil. A solar project that we learned about on Earth Day in grade school many years back. I hope the dyeing works better. Our hotdogs never got more than luke warm.
