I'm curious to find a holder for my double-points for when I'm working on a sock. Has anyone seen such a thing? I just hate having lost a stitch or have the needles poking into the sock in progress. --this I suppose would be on my wish list

i have some handy holders that are basically two black caps with elastic between them. The caps slip over the ends of the needles and are held tight by the elastic, holding the project together.

I love Stitch Keepers! I found a source online at Knitters Mercantile. I got mine from Knit Picks, but they no longer carry them. I haven't ordered from K. M., because... well, I have about a dozen already...

It does look cool, but I have never had stitches fall off my dpns when knitting socks. I just push the knitting to the middle of the needles.

I had one too many knitting bag mishaps -- you know, when you rummage around for your sock, and it's all tangled up even though you thought you'd rolled it up? Or when you pick up your sock, pull on the "free" needle, only to find that it actually held stitches? Stitch keepers keep everything safe and sound.

That's why i use it, too, Jane. Often, my sock project is in the same bag with my running or ski stuff, books, and assorted other things. One needle gets caught in the center of a book and i end up with 30 tiny stitches pulled out. Thanks for posting the name and link to Knitters Mercantile. I've only bought them at my LYS and was at a loss for what they were called.
I hope you like them also, Kris!

The Yarn Harlot was given a tin DPN holder during her last tour. You can see it here. Do a search on the page for "coolest metal needle thingie".
Naturally, I inquired about them and found out that these tin needle holders are a replica of one used in the 1800's. It's 9.25" long and 1.5"+ inches in circumference. It's $19.50 which includes U.S. shipping. Also, I was told that these hold needles US sizes 0-3. They're working on making larger sizes.
However, they are now in high-demand, so it's backordered. I'm patiently waiting.

| When I used to do socks on dpns I just folded the sock up so the dpns were all parallel to each other and wrapped rubber bands around both ends. Now I do socks on 2 circs and it's no longer a problem. |

Holly, those are terrific - where did you find little rubber caps to make them? I've been looking but can't find any.

HeHeHe - just stole a pack of the plastic end caps from DH's tool bench. (Stole the elastic cording from DD's jewelry making supplies). Goodie Goodie for me...goodie goodie for you! Gonna make a few needle protectors.
It is easier to be forgiven than to receive permission. |

I've got the needle holders in my shop. I am the only one in the country that has them. they are actually reproductions of those used in the 1800's. We have changed them a little to accomodate todays knitting. The edges are now hemmed and we have a new size to fit the smaller 5-7 1/4 dpn's. They are made of tin in the original fashon, using period tools and techniques. Very handy. I can't do without mine cuz i have socks going all the time.
