I was having dinner at a Thai restaurant last night when DH asked about the Thai iced tea. Tastes like anise, I told him, and stains like mad. Red, as I recall. And then I thought, Hmmmm...I wonder if I could dye with that. Has anyone had any experience with it, either deliberately or accidentally?

I've dyed with black tea before and had good results. Do you know whether the base tea in Thai iced tea is a black or an oolong? I doubt that green teas dye very strongly.

I love thai tea....I'm afraid I'd never get past the drinking stage to use it for dyeing, but if you do...let us know how it turns out!

I can't imagine that it's a green tea, it's much too dark. I also wonder about the Celestial Seasonings hibiscus-flavored tea that's a pink - can't think of the name just now. If I do any good, I'll let you know. I want to try some turmeric, too.

We had dinner at a Thai place Sunday night, and had virtually the same discussion. The tea was an intense dark orange, most attractive when the milk was stirred in.
I must admit I did not care for the flavor--too much "burned herb" for me. Does anyone know if it is the variety of tea leaves, or are other spices added to it to obtain that flavor?
But off hand, I would think you could certainly dye with it!

I am told by the Thai owner of the local import store and also of a couple of Thai restaurants that it's spicing in the tea.
