Does anyone know how to tailspin? I have some lovely mohair locks that I would like to make into a tailspun yarn, but I just can't figure out how to do it! I even have some tailspun yarn that I bought, but looking at it just is not helping me to figure it out... And I can't find any directions on the internet, although I have learned a great deal about fishing lures and the mating habits of certain fish. Does anyone know how to do it?

I don't know what tailspun yarn is? I may call it something else, though - so could you describe what it looks like?

Kristin-
when you say tailspin, are you meaning the kind of yarn that has the curls popping out along the yarn? like this?

We raise cashgora goats, and their fleece is wild a furry - so here's what I did-
spin a single yarn (with a bit of overtwist) and then begin a new bobbin (like you are plying) hold a small amount of the wild curly fiber in your left hand and "flick" it along the single as you are moving the wheel in a counterclockwise motion. (Note that your left hand will be moving up and down the yarn as you release the locks onto the core) The single ply yarn will grab the curly locks (and eventually be hidden by them) and some of the curly tails will pop out.
I found that when learning to do this technique, it was easier to use a commercially spun yarn (any old one will do) because it takes a bit of practice to move your left hand quickly enough - otherwise you end up with a very weak fragile core under the curly locks.
