I am trying to figure out which item would best give me WPI - here are the three options: 1) A spinners control card (has different thicknesses of singles printed on a plastic card for even spinning 2) A wooden measure w/ a notch 3) A WPI stick
I used a school ruler forever, until I was gifted with a combination wpi/diz tool. It did the job. I've also used a folded index card - the ones with the grid.
What gives you the best wpi is consistancy in spinning and wrapping, not what you wrap it around.

I was looking through the house for a ruler, when I realized that my Skacel knitting needle gauge also has a 2-inch cut out for measuring stitch gauge. I wrapped the yarn around the needle gauge and was able to get a count of wpi across two inches.
