I bought a raw alpaca fleece It's dusty & has grass, leaves etc stuck in it. It's not greasy but what's the most efficient way of getting the dirt off before carding it?

Just wash it in a tub of warmish water with some soap. No agitation so that you don't get felt.

You may have to wash a couple of times, to get all the dirt out....Alpaca's like to roll.

Then just pick out the worst of the stuff. Carding and combing will get the rest out.

If you want it to dry faster you can spin it dry in the washer. Just make sure the water is turned off and run it through the spin cycle.

I will just comb it and 95% of the vegitable matter falls out. I spin it then wash it to set it. Always comes out beautifully.

I have some new llama that I just got from DB that I have been doing that with.

Hmm.I need to look into some combs...
i tried pulling it apart & a lot of VM fell out. but that only works in the first 2-3 times you do that - then it stays. the really small stuff never falls out but i'm hoping i'll get to that when i spin.
