I am wondering if anyone knows of any fiber animal ranchers who have opportunities to vacation at their working ranch to learn about raising fiber animals, take classes, hang out with other fiber enthusiasts? Fiber festivals are great, and maybe that's where I need to go to meet ranchers.
Any information out there? |

What a great idea--I wish I knew of someone. You're right, starting by asking questions at fiber festivals is probably a good way to go about it. Good luck--let us know if you find anything fun.

I can't speak for all animal owners, but I can tell you that when I was researching alpacas a few years ago I found them shockingly open to inviting one to stay at their home for a weekend to play with the animals. (they were less open to adopting me, which is what I really wanted)
If you're thinking of a specific animal/breed, you may look into their breeding standards and see if that puts you in touch with some breeders and contact them that way.

| The Craftsbury Inn in Craftsbury Vermont (Kathy and Bill Maire) have a website. The also have a minifarm including an alpaca, llama, cashmere goats, various sheep and some really cool looking ducks. Kathy is an avid knitter/spinner, your basic fiber junkie. Bill is a trained french chef. The off season is about start due to the lack of decent snow this year. Lambing and kidding should be soon. get a group together and make it your own retreat. Disclaimer: Kathy is a spinning buddy of mine and good friend. |

http://www.steamvalleyfiber.com/ offers apprenticeships at their farm during the summer to help people learn how real farms work. They seemd to be a very friendly sort when I talked to them at Rhinebeck last yr.
