I don't know what else to call it. We have a little prayer book and one of the Wise Men is wearing this hat with a peak in the middle. I have the Folk Hats book, but it's not in there. Does anyone know where I might find patterns for ancient hats?

Well, I made a cylandrical hat with a peaked top by accident this winter!
Straight side crown, no problem. For the top, work in the round to decrease to the center. Initially in most patterns, you decrease at six (seven, eight) evenly spaced markers every other row.
Then when six (seven, eight) stitches remain between the markers you switch to decreasing EVERY row. Somehow I missed that part and kept on with alternate row decreases.
The cap had a lovely pointed top, which I liked but my kids thought was completely embarrassing. I frogged.
Is that the look you are after?

| We have a picture of one of the wise men with a hat that looks like a modern cardinal hat ( coincidence?), but I was thinking there is a knitting for kids book that I just saw that has a crown in it--along with lots of costumey type things. Perhaps that might be somthing to consider--Ill try to find this at the bookstore..,,,Annhope |

If this is for recreational costume purposes, we made a great one for a school play out of commercial felt. We cut three pieces of felt which were each 1/3 the total circumference of the actor's head wide at the bottom, plus a little seam allowance. The top part of each piece was cut into a Kremlin-like point -- very onion dome. We sewed each piece to it's neighbor with the seam exposed and liberally embellished with gold fabric paint.
I still have the hat if you need a snapshot.
Tacky, wacky and perfect. But not an heirloom!

| During the rains here I often go to the library and return with an armload of magazines--this week it was Piecework. In one they had a hat from one of the former USSR countires--it was made of wool felt and whip stitched on the outside. A bit odd, but intersting....Annhope |

| At long last I have both sources I thought of for you hat--the first is the felt sewn hat from Jan-Feb 2006 Piecework magazine. The other hat is knit then felted, and I think this is from a book called "New Knit on the Block" which is full of kids stuff that I wouldn't make--like a hula costume, superman cape, etc--but in there I found a felted crown. I saw this book at one JoAnns, and never again until last week I was on vacation--and there it was. I hope the name is right. LMK if this helps..........Annhope |
