The handknitters guild is in Carlton.
Hi Tam - they moved from Carlton some years ago (and were later in Coburg for some time), but are now housed in the city, in Ross House, Flinders Lane.
They meet for sit & knits monthly (first Sunday iirc ?) and run regular workshops through the year on a variety of knitting topics (and suitable for a variety of skill levels). Also one-on-one lessons for new knitters can be arranged. They have a very extensive permanent library at Ross House, and I feel pretty sure that borrowing is free for members.
Their annual Wool Expo each June is not to be missed, and they sometimes arrange bus tours to all places woolly. There's also some charity knitting & fundraising going on. They had a stand at the recent Craft & Quilt Show in Melbourne, and I think they'll take better advantage of that next year, and use it as a display/marketing opportunity. They send out their quarterly newsletter to members, plus an email news update at intervals.
If anyone would like direct telephone/postal contact details, just drop me an email via my website, as they'd always welcome new members. I think I pay $25 membership as a non-metro member.
I'm also a member of the NSW Knitter's Guild - you don't need to live in the same state to take advantage of the membership and it can be interesting to read (via their Newsletter) what knitters around the country are getting up to.

Hi,
Thank you Wanda, Tam and Sarah. Just one more question. What do they actually do there, do they have knitting classes or what?
I've only just heard about knitting guilds, so am completely in the dark.
Wanda I will check out the sites, thank you.

The knitting guild I was involved in had classes, senimars, speakers that talked/demostrated different techniques. We also did community service projects, like knit baby caps or blankets. Some stores give discounts if you are a guild member. Our guild would get together and go to a knit show.
