Hi all--
I posted about this on the techniques forum, but I thought I'd post here, too, since it's about kid's patterns. I'm wondering about yarn for both the babies' and children's neck-down pullovers from KPS. I've noticed that lots of people on line (esp on the KPS website) have used either Encore or Shepherd's Worsted for these sweaters, but that the gauge is 4 stitches to the inch-- as opposed to 4.5-5, which these yarns produce. Have people altered the pattern to make this work, or is the pattern simple so big (it looks big to me) that it doesn't make that much difference?

The percentage difference is 12% or 25%, and that could make a huge difference in size.
I can't answer the question too intelligently though, unless I see the sweaters and can tell how much ease is built in.
But, the recommended gauge on the ball band isn't exactly graven in stone and Moses didn't bring them down off the mountain. A recommended gauge is just what two or 3 people agreed looks okay. I'm currently working exactly the same yarn--same make, item and color on 2 different things. A ruffled scarf for my 9 year old grandniece is doubleknit on size 15KN at 2.25=1 inch. It looks cool as all get out, makes the colors stripe neat and has a nice stretchy hand, but isn't at all lacy since it is a doubled fabric.
Same yarn on size 6 KN for me makes a nice, sort of standard hand in stockinette at a gauge of 4.5 st = 1 inch--which is working up into a size 12-18 months hoodie for a new baby.
I'm real pleased with both results and i'm changing the gauge AGAIN for the matching hat for the ruffled scarf. The hat will be big brimmed with a ruffly flower to shape it and doubled too, but I didn't want it as "frothy" as the scarf, so I'm down to size 11s and about 3 st=1inch.
Gauge, like everything else in fiber, is just a decision that you make to suit yourself.

I"ve knit the KP&S patterns in Encore, Cascade 220 and Cascade Sierra.
Honestly, I didn't get perfect gauge, (and when I knit in the round my gauge changes and I relax and just knit) but the sweaters are simple to adjust in size.
The Encore and Cascade 220 (both worsted wt) gave me a nice fabric for our winters, not to cold.
The Sierra, more of a dk wt, I knit on size 9 needles and it's very open and breezy, perfect for a cool fall day.
The patterns are great! Support is just a phone call away.
