Hi Everyone,
Just doing a little poll here which consolidates questions I've seen under " general felting discussion" (including my own) in one place - hopefully it will be helpful to other felters who use washing machines to felt. In any case might be interesting to find out  ;
Do you:
1. Use a Top Loading or Front Loading machine?
2. put in colorcatchers? and if so where do you put them
(for example, in pillowcase with felted project)
3. use soap/detergent/nothing? if you use soap/detergent, what kind do you use?
4. put anything in with wash to increase agitation? if so, what?
5. what particular kinds of yarns have you tried felting with?
6. have there been any yarns that you notice felt faster than others?
if so, did you have to alter any of your usual felting techniques to adjust and what specifically did you do?
7. have there been any yarns that you notice felt slower than others?
if so, did you have to alter any of your usual felting techniques to adjust and what specifically did you do?
If enough people respond, I'm thinking of setting up a webpage someplace so everyone can easily find all this info as a handy reference.
Suggestions of questions to add to the poll more than welcome!

Here are my answers:
1. Front Loading
2. I've never used colorcatchers
3. a little bit of whatever is on hand
4. jeans, towels and tennis balls
5. cascade 220, brown sheep, lopi, rowan magpie (hiss).
6. lopi has occasionally felted faster. But in a front loader it is all relative: fast is 4-5 cycles compared to 10 cycles for some
7.rowan magpie. I will never felt wtih this again.

Normally a front loader because that's what I have at home.

No.
3. use soap/detergent/nothing? if you use soap/detergent, what kind do you use?
I use a small amount of regular clothes washing detergent made for my front-loading machine (i.e., a low sudsing detergent) - mainly ALL, I think.
4. put anything in with wash to increase agitation? if so, what?
I normally use a pair or two of jeans, if they're hanging around needing to be washed, and I always throw in a couple of pair of my kids' outgrown tennis shoes.
5. what particular kinds of yarns have you tried felting with?
I've felted with Kureyon, Cascade 220, Knit Picks Wool of the Andes, Lion Brand Wool, Patons Classic Merino, Arucania Nature Wool worsted, Lamb's Pride worsted
6. have there been any yarns that you notice felt faster than others?
if so, did you have to alter any of your usual felting techniques to adjust and what specifically did you do?
Without any adjustment, Patons Classic Merino felted the fastest for me, followed pretty quickly by all the rest except for Kureyon.

Kureyon definitely felts slower than other wools I've used. I just keep at it until it's where I like, or I feel it won't felt anymore.

6. Cascade 220 felted a lot faster than the Kureyon - no adjustments as I don't mix different types of yarns
7. Again, Kureyon took longer and I just ran it through more wash cycles |

3. use soap/detergent/nothing? if you use soap/detergent, what kind do you use? A tad bit of detergent – whatever I happen to have4. put anything in with wash to increase agitation? if so, what? My river shoes! They get a cleaning while they do the hard work for me.
5. what particular kinds of yarns have you tried felting with? Wool of the Andes, Manos, Brown Sheep, Cascade, and…

if so, did you have to alter any of your usual felting techniques to adjust and what specifically did you do? Every wool is different. I have no specific expectations so I have no disappointments.

if so, did you have to alter any of your usual felting techniques to adjust and what specifically did you do? Ditto what I said before. |
