This is the first time I venture on the crochet forum... sorry if I'm asking a dumb question!

I finished a knitted sweater and the pattern says to use a crochet hook to make button loops on one side (then the buttons will be seamed on the other side). Here's a picture of the sweater:

If you click on the pictures, there's a closeup of the buttons.

I am unsure of the best way to make sure that the loops are flexible enough for the buttons to go through but not too big that the buttons fall out. Any idea or suggestion welcome! Thanks in advance!!

Hi Wheat,

I ended up adding a single loop chain directly on the knitted garment (instead of doing the chain separately and then seaming it to the garment) -- it worked because the buttons were rather big but if I had to do it again with smaller buttons, I would definitely go through the trouble of seaming the chain afterwards.
