I'm considering knitting a Starmore pattern and may try to spin the yarn for it. Its been a few years now since I did more than the odd little bit of spinning so I'm not sure that it will realistically happen . . . but I'm wondering if anyone has spun their own yarn to simulate Starmore's Scottish Heather or Hebridean 3-ply and might have tips to share?

Hello Martheme
At the moment I’m knitting pullover using homemade yarn. My grandma spun them a lot year ago. It’s so impressive that you decided to spin yarn for your patterns. Do you have spinning-wheel? I think your sweater will be great.

Wow are you using the yarn your grandmother spun? That is great! Such a nice thing to have to knit with!

I actually have 2 wheels, one is small and portable but the other is not. For now, I have to use the smaller one as the larger has to remain where the children can't reach it - they might take it apart!

I have a shawl (3/4 finished) from handspun and I knit a sweater for my husband from handspun and lots of smaller projects but this will be my first sweater for myself from handspun.

I just finished a sweater with handspun 3-ply BLF in an approximately 2000 ypp weight. It worked beautifully - I spun it on the Majacraft Rose at a 10:1 ratio, then Navaho-plyed to get the 3-ply I wanted. There's a photo of the sweater here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tnwevr/4382301620/. Any natural colored yarn is going to give you the heathery look of the Hebridean. Or if you want a color, dye the fleece or roving before spinning, then mix with a bit of natural color if necessary to get the look you want. Another option would be to do a standard 3-ply yarn, using a complementary natural color as one of the plies.

There are lots of ways to get a heathery handspun yarn - just play around a bit until you find the method that gives you the yarn you want!
