Okay so what is felting? Do I have to do it? I want to make a bag and it calls for felting. Also on a couple of hat patterns it calls for the same. What is it and is it important? Thanks |

Felting is a process where the fiber is compacted. It can be done by dry or wet aggitation of the material. Dry felting is commonly accomplished by pricking the fibers repeatedly. It can also be accomplished by scrubbing or otherwise abrading the fiber or knit/crocheted/woven fabric. Wet felting is done accidently when you throw a shrinkable garment into the wash.
In the case of your bag and hat patterns felting is done on purpose by knitting the project on needles that will produce a somewhat floppy end. It is then purposefully washed and aggitated. Hot water speeds the process. What results is a firm, dense fabic that holds it's shape.
If a pattern calls for felting, knitting the project on a smaller sized needle really will not give the same result even if you get the correct gauge.
One last word, felting cannot be performed on synthetic or "machine washable" yarns. |

Felting is Fabulous! Google felted purses or felted handbags, etc., and you will find lots of inspiration and instruction. To see some of the fun I had with it a couple of years ago, click my link below.

Salutations
Felting is a lot of work, but worth it. I just felted three hats: baseball cap, Stetson, and a bonnet. Two I did wet felting with a sander, the bonnet I started with wet felting, but let it dry and kept working on it with the evil needles. If you are going to wet felt, check out "Hat Shapers". They sell hard plastic hat forms to use.
Be well, happy, safe and peaceful.
