I have been musing about this question while knitting a bright red sweater for Afghans for Afghans. So far my contributions have been unisex, and in bright colors as requested. This time I added a beaded rib for the ribbing, which I think looks kind of lacy without having "holes". I would just like to think of a little girl getting this sweater, although I can't request that.
Any ideas about what girls like in garments? I figure some of this has got to be universal! The A for A guidelines request no pastels, and no laciness; utilitarian seems to be the rule.
(I don't have any little girls in my life right now, more's the pity.)

Pretty buttons would be a nice touch on a plain cardigan, and also make it more "girlie".

Thanks so much for the suggestions. My sweater OTN is a pullover, and I will definitely add pockets. That is a great idea (for boy or girl). And buttons are a wonderful option for making a sweater a signature item, thanks, Kristina. I will take a look at cable patterns, looking for a special one for my next project. Maybe that sweater with cables along the raglan lines? Thanks, Rachel.

Thistle cables could be cute, too. Another option would be putting a pocket with a special cable on it, as just a little special touch.

Marjolein, I am going to take that suggestion for waist shaping. You are right, just a bit would make a difference. The current campaign is for children aged 7-16, so I think waist shaping would be appropriate.
