Last year I knitted ski caps for my 3 sons and my son-in-law, and lacy slouch caps for my daughter and daughter-in-law...they were extremely well received (each done in the individual's favorite color); so, I've started fingerless mittens with thumb gussets for the gang, and for a few friends...so lots of knitting ahead! I use the magic loop method and have found the technique adaptable to every project that I've wanted to knit. Happy knitting, everyone!!

Good for you for getting such an early start! I have to finish a blanket for my sister's October birthday before I do anything else. This year may be a slipper Christmas. I did fingerless mitts last year and they were extremely popular.

I want to get started on JP's vest and the hat I promised someone here on KR (now that I'm back from my latest training). But I also want to buy some really soft yarn and knit youngest DS a black, manly cowl for his birthday in late October. He's going away to college next week and will be in a colder area even than we are (he'll be a little west of Ft. Wayne, IN). The college colors are black and gold but I haven't been able to find a gold I like. He's been hinting like crazy for a new scarf in the school colors but there's no way on earth I can get that done in time.

Do you have a quick and fast easy slipper pattern to share?

I'm making my DIL a sweater. I have the yarn bought but haven't started yet. I'm also knitting a baby banket for my niece's new baby. I'm about a quarter of the way on that and it's a good projet to take while DH drives. We're heading south for the winter next week - with a stop at Stitches East - so that should get a big push then/
2012 has been decared as the "knit for ME" year. I've said this before but this time I MEAN IT! I can't wait.

Donna, can I be your sister, too? You are very generous to make such a nice gift for them.

A million years ago, when my girls and my Sis's children were wee, I made everyone Christmas stockings of varying kinds. They are all still using them 30 plus years later. Now that we have welcomed the first of the next generation, my niece asked if I would make her little one a stocking. I realized that I no longer have any interest in quilting, embroidery, or needlepoint, so I decided to knit one. Of course I couldn't find anything that was just right. I wanted colorful, busy, large and practical. I have to say it was a fun project until I realized that I put the heel of the stocking on the wrong side. I felted lightly first, then surgically corrected my mistake and re-felted. It's not perfect, but I love it. Hope she does too.

Consuelo, I have also declared 2012 "Knit for me year" and here's why. For next week I need to finish a crocheted baby blanket for our neice. For Christmas I am knitting a sweater, a vest, fingerless gloves, slipper socks, mittens, a scarf, and 2 hats; sewing a blanket and 2 pair of mittens and framing 2 crossstitch Christmas scenes that I stitched. This is not counting the items that are done and waiting patiently in a box. All projects in process and I still believe I will finish them all on time. Every year I think I will do less or smaller and then I see a great pattern and then another and it just gets bigger and bigger until Christmas morning and then I start something for myself that usually gets put aside and the gifts start to add up again. And even though I have dreams of a shawl I know deep down I woulnd't have it any other way. I love to give hand made items.

I am madly knitting 4 felted fish purses for great nieces from the Folk Bag book. Have finished one, and started the next. Just about finished a sweater for great nephew but saw dead fish hat so, might make him one as all the girls are getting fishes. They are all under 5, but will all be together for Christmas. Working on DD's sweater, about 1/2 done.

Tasanawright, I don't usually use a specific slipper pattern. I usually just knit very thick socks with a short cuff, possibly felted. I do have a pattern I bought as a kit from Mary Maxxim-- a simple ballet-slipper style with cables, out of bulky yarn. They only took a couple of hours to make. Maybe I'll try felted clogs this year. It's about time to start--I realize I wrote the above post in August and I have not made any presents yet!

I have been working on a knitted afghan for my Son in Law since July. I have just 15 rows left on the last border. Yeah, it is turning out so nice. That is about it for knitted gifts this year.

Started a Harry Potter scarf for my son, and recently completed a tam for a good friend...however, just got asked to knit 2 sweaters for Christmas presents....may or may not make it by December 25th...yikes! (and the recipients still haven't decided on the yarn they want)

Last year I knitted a sweater for my Dad, and illusion scarf and Fair Isle hat for each of my 3 nephews, felted slippers for sister and friends, and I wove scarves for other gifts. Deep breath: This year I am knitting a fair Isle sweater for my BIL, Christmas socks for sister and in-laws, fingerless gloves for various friends and cowls or scarves for the rest. My apartment is a mess. |

I have a hard time knitting multipal things for specific occasions (Christmas), so I just knit all year around and send the finished project out once done. Less pressure on me.

I just may have to adopt that strategy... especially since I have *way* too much to do before Christmas to really get done all the little handmade gifts I was hoping to get done before Christmas eve. I *just* might be able to make the stocking-stuffer knitted toys for the kids in time, but probably not all the rest.

If I can ever get measurements of my SIL and brother's feet, they might get a pair of socks for Christmas from me someday...
I want to get back into making gifts for Christmas and other gift giving occasions. Gifts from the heart are more fun to give. There aren't that many people for whom I would knit - my youngest son, my husband, my bro and SIL and a few friends. When the grands get older - them too. I hate to make things that they will grow out of so quickly. I have made each of them an afghan in the past. My older kids are quite picky.
I do make knitted gifts to welcome babies quite frequently.
Hmmm...I think I should make out a list and see if I can give hand-made gifts for Christmas this year (2012).

I used to make a lot of gifts but this year I only managed one scarf. If I start planning now maybe I can get something out for next year.

I love making gifts, and people get them when I finish. I wrap in birthday or holiday paper, even if the season's wrong or it's late. The recipient doesn't seem to mind, it creates a festive mood and usually starts up a lively conversation. I guess it really is the thought that counts.
