Hi, knitters. I've wondering how many of you out there knit primarily with acrylic or big box store yarns? I've seen your pics on Ravelry, so I know I'm not the only one. I'm sure there are a lot of us who by choice or because of finances knit regularly with these yarns. It's time for us to quit lurking, come out of the closet and admit who we are. Are you with me

What I use for my projects depends on what I am making and for whom. I do buy and use yarn from the "big box"stores quite often, I also on occasion buy yarn at our local "surplus and salvage" store and resale shops. I also patronize my local yarn shop for other types of yarn and projects. judy |

I also use a mixture of yarns based on the project. I spin my own yarn using various wools and other fibers, I buy natural fiber yarns from the LYS and fiber shows, I buy novelty yarns from all kinds of places if I like it, I buy anything from laceweight to bulky if I think I can find a use for it.
This plan of action leads to a stash that is, well, big. And varied. And usually there is something to knit with regardless of whatever project is at hand. But, sometimes not, and I will go out for whatever is needed, be it from Michaels/JoAnns or similar or one of my LYS. Or I spin it up. I like having lots of choices.

At one time, when I first started knitting, I didn't know there was anything else besides big box store yarn. Then as I became more "experienced," I learned about all these beautiful but expensive yarns.
I became a bit of a yarn snob.
But as I started knitting baby things for people and realizing that there would be a good chance that a baby will spit up on that beautiful and expensive yarn, and maybe the parents would prefer something that is easy to clean, I realized the importance of having big box yarn in my stash. There are plenty of soft acryllic yarns that make beautiful blankets.
Yes - I knit with big box store yarns and I'm not embarrassed...anymore.

I use both depending on projects. Baby stuff is big box store. The wash and dry is so important.

I use whatever yarn is appropriate for the project at hand. If it will need a great deal of washing, then I get the softest acrylic I can find. But I would be a liar if I didn't admit I also have a penchant for the natural fibers and I am devoted to getting them as inexpensively as I can.
Sometimes Elann or other online places have sales and I can get my favorites for less than what I can get things for at Big Box stores.
I think we should use what we like to use and what we can afford to use. I see no reason for anyone to be in closets over the fibers we knit with, one way or the other.
