As part of my effort to knit socks for myself in 2012, I'm also trying heels other than the traditional flap & gusset (my favorite) so I can "test" them myself before using them on gift socks.

Well, after wearing and washing my Strong-heel socks several times, I'm not so sure I like them as much as I thought I would ... they don't seem to hold their shape during wear and become loose and saggy in the heel area; there doesn't really seem to be any "arch" and I do have a slightly high instep. Since making only this one pair using this heel, as well as a first-time yarn, I can't be certain if the problem is actually the heel pattern or the yarn (Knit Picks Felicity), but I'm suspecting the heel structure (there just isn't much) since the other parts of the sock seem to stay put okay. I made a plain stockinette sock with about two inches of 2x2 ribbing at the top. If I do decide to make this heel again, perhaps ribbing all the way down over the instep will improve the fit.

Surprisingly, I am finding that I like the fit and wear of my afterthought heels much better than I had anticipated. Although I dislike their appearance off the foot, they look and feel great ON my foot; the way the heel sticks out does seem to offer a better fit in the arch/instep area than does the Strong heel, for me personally. I did try them on as I knit them (on 4 more than half the 64 total stitches) and learned that I needed to knit about six rows plain before beginning any decreases. I made these socks using the "toe" formula, but without any stitches between decrease pairs (I like the look).

I also want to try an afterthought heel with six decrease points around in a spiral as well as ColorJoy's "crystal" heels. Hopefully I'll get to those before fall in between other projects!

Donna, with intentions always bigger than her available time. (OkieDokieKnitter on Ravelry)

ikkivan, I am so glad to hear that someone else likes the afterthought heel. I have not tried a 6-point decrease. I usually knit 5 rows straight before starting the toe like decreases. If I know about a high instep preference I do the afterthought heel over 2 sts more than 1/2 the total sts around the foot.
